Tony at the BP on Kingsway in Sth Melbourne is a great all-round mechanic. Tel 9696-6990. And if you have an older English car — Jaguars a speciality, but they will do anything English — John and his team at Downshire Motors in Malvern. Tel 9571-3868
Billy @ South Melbourne Mechanics (134 Thistlewaite Street, South Melbourne 9699 2277). We’ve been taking our cars to Billy for over 5 years now and never a problem, he’s honest, works fast and he’s also genuinely a nice guy. He’s also reasonably priced – the standard service on my Volvo is roughly $1000+ at the dealer and Billy’s never charged more than $265 for a standard service.
Leon at JJ Service Centre, Inkerman St, East St Kilda. He’s genuine, up-front about pricing before he does the work, gives you all the options for new or reconditioned parts, will prioritise tasks to suit your budget (handy when I was a povvo uni student) and I’ve never been disappointed. He’s also never treated me like a stupid woman who doesn’t know diddly about cars. Worth travelling across town for.
Pete at Real Automotive (www.realautomotive.com.au) in huntingdale / oakleigh is fantastic. He is straight forward in his diagnosis and gives you options if you want the cheapest or better quality repairs. What I love most is that there are no additional add ons such as engine additives, workshop consumables etc. The hourly rate is only $77 and he is very friendly and respectful to deal with.

The Local Village Garage on Tooronga Rd in Glen Iris. Brett and the boys there are super helpful and honest. They have guys that specialize in 4WD and European cars. I’ve taken mine and my wife’s cars there for years and even when we moved suburbs I still go back there because of the great service.
The best in service in my opinion for my car is Harris Freer Berwick
Elite Tuning in Ringwood. It’s where other mechanics go when they need diagnostic help.
McCormack Autos in Werribee are the best that I have encountered. Only problem with them is because they are good they are always very busy lol
