There’s a rich history of beautiful, opulent old theatres in Melbourne CBD. Some are haunted by theatrical ghosts, others have a bit of a colourful history… but the one thing they have in common is that they’re all beautiful structures. What is your favourite old theatre in Melbourne, and why do you love it?

The Princess Theatre in Spring Street immediately springs to mind as an old-world beauty – everyone can admire that beautiful marble staircase, no matter how much you love modern architecture.

Her Majesty’s Theatre in Exhibition Street is also another beautiful old theatre – and during the day, you can poke your head into the Maj Cafe to get a peek at the beautiful art deco architecture without paying for a full price theatre ticket.

We have a feeling that most people responding to this post will be fans of the inimitable gothic Forum Theatre – everyone’s seen a gig there at some point and experienced the otherworldly interiors – and that’s just the classy bathrooms!

What are your personal favourite old theatres in Melbourne, and why do you love them?

It would have been the Astor due to their resident cat Marzipan, but she recently passed away. So now its ‘just’ a theatre.

The Princess – beautiful, old, intimate with a sence of grandeur on arrival, with memories of seeing Les Mis and Phantom for the first time and of course Frederici. Also can’t go past the foyer of the original picture palace that is now The Regent Theatre – 1930′s opulence with all the marble staircases and chandeliers.

The Astor! You always feel like you are going to see a 1920′s horror flick as you walk in
