We’ve all seen those Melbourne suburbs which are popping up and looking like Legoland – kilometres upon kilometres of insta-mansions which seem way too big for any reasonably sized family.

Critics debate their effectiveness in managing smart growth of communities. It’s better to have a not so big house, they proclaim. But there’s quite a few suburbs out there filled with these types of homes.

So where’s the worst area in Melbourne filled with McMansions and why?

Since it was constructed, Federation Square has served as a great meeting point for events in the city. However, it does attract criticism from some.

It’s arguable that there’s a feeling of something missing from Fed Square… an attraction to truly liven the area up.

So how would you improve Fed Square? What’s wrong with it currently, and how do we go about fixing it?

lonsdale-houseOver the last few days, revelations that a developer is set to demolish Lonsdale House have sent a wave of disbelief throughout Melbourne. How was this building not heritage listed, we demanded?

But it’s true: if you’ve been keeping track of Myer’s current refurbishments, they’re set to close their Lonsdale Street store and consolidate everything into the Bourke Street store. Turns out Lonsdale House isn’t listed as heritage, and Melbourne City Council are rolling over for the developers. The building is destined to become the entrance to a new shopping centre named Emporium Melbourne.

I’m sure that I read that the new centre would be inspired by the nearby QV – lots of open-air laneways weaving around the building. Unfortunately, the artist’s impressions that are now appearing in the media don’t suggest this at all.

So, Lonsdale House aside, which other Melbourne buildings should we fight hardest against being redeveloped, and why?

Melbourne has its fair share of bizarre architecture – what do you reckon is the ugliest?

Perhaps you consider Federation Square to be the modern architectural equivalent of a technicolour yawn.

Maybe it’s something ancient and disastrous from decades gone by, that just has you scratching your head as to why it was created in the first place.

More than likely, there’s some disastrous shambles of a building in your local suburb which should have been destroyed long ago.
