Where are the best cinemas in Melbourne?

Everyone loves the movie theatres in Melbourne – we have so many beautiful old art deco theatres to choose from. So when you’re looking up movie showtimes, which movie cinemas in Melbourne do you find yourself returning to?

Perhaps you’re happy with a Hoyts movie theatre, or even Gold Class cinemas. Chain cinemas always seem to be the best places to go for films which are new at the cinema.

Then again, there’s lots of speciality cinemas out there too – some offer really cheap movie tickets to classic movies, and let’s not forget the growing number of Melbourne outdoor cinemas around town for a really unique experience.

Let’s help out those who are new to Melbourne. Where do you rate as the best cinema in Melbourne?

Palace Balwyn for me. Quite a genteel crowd though…

The Sun – the essence of Melbournism – but why are we telling people about it?

It’s such a shame that the Nova has such poor service. Apparently it’s like a disease amongst their staff that makes them so unwilling to be helpful. I find a lot of them act as if they are SUCH important cinema people. Is it too much to ask for coertesy and a smile?

Classic Cinema. They have edamame as a bar snack, as well as alcohol.

The Sun Cinema in Yarraville has everything one would need. It has accessibility being right near the train station, a lovely range of cafes and restaurants near by, a book shop included if you’re waiting, a lovely selection of things from the candy bar and affordable prices for everyone, especially on mondays and tuesdays.
It has a range of lovely cinemas which you’re able to take a glass of wine into and you don’t have to be cramped up with people all around. It really has a lovely mood set. There isn’t one any better. It showcases not only the modern films but the art house and foreign too.

I think I would travel across town for Westgarth’s Palace cinema…stunning art déco architecture, great staff, allocated seating and boysenberry choc tops. :)

I love the nova in Carlton. Great line up of movies and respectful fellow cinema goers. No talking or playing around on their iPhones. Coburg drive in, fun for a night out too

I’ll tell you where the worst is: Cinema Nova. Terrific program. Bad attitude. Over priced, crap projection and non-existent staff. Stick to the Sun Theatre in Yarraville. Their program is not adventurous but what loveliness in that terrific space!

The Sun Theatre in Yarraville is a beautiful building and shows a good mix of blockbuster and independent films. You can take a cheeky wine in plus there are some great cafes nearby for a meal before/after a movie.

Cameo Cinemas in Belgrave! Sister to Cinema Nova, nestled in the green hills, cosy, excellent value, brilliant outdoor cinema set-up in Summer, art house and mainstream movies…but best of all, they serve EXCELLENT local craft beers that you can drink in the movie! No Gold Glass required…order at the bar when you buy your ticket and enjoy the movie with beer. Brilliant.

Oh…and so helpfully a short walk from my home.
