We’ve heard from the northsiders, now it’s time for the southside to speak up.
Some people think the south side of the city is a little classier, and they can claim the only beaches in Melbourne… as close as we’ll ever get to beaches, anyway.
Critics of this part of town seem to think it’s just a little bit stuck up, way too expensive and lacks any soul.
On the other hand, there’s some great nightlife and bars on this side of town, although housing and rental still seems a little bit pricier in this area.
Why is living south of the Yarra so much better than the north?

Isn’t it always said that you never move to the other side of the river (the yarra) that you didn’t grow up on? Born and raised in Frankston but have made my way northward over the years, and now well and truly settled in St Kilda. We have the night life, restaurants, beach and cafes. AND the muzza’s only hit southside on the weekends…west and north gets em for the rest of the time!
Red Symons lives north of the Yarra!
Like you’ve already mentioned, we have the beaches, the best shopping centres (Chadstone shopping centre – biggest in the Southern hemisphere!), short drive to the Dandy mountains with the best lookout of Melbourne city, loads of great restaurants/cafes etc. List goes on..
