The Melbourne dining scene is frequently cited as a barometer of Australia’s food scene… so we usually see new dining trends popping up here before anywhere else in the country. So when it comes to food in Melbourne, what are the most interesting trends you’ve noticed lately?
Whether it’s an interesting new twist on an international cuisine, or simply the forefront of Australian food (what are Australian foods, really, anyway?) – you’ll often see new styles of eateries popping up in the trendier parts of town before they start spreading throughout the city like a virus; sometimes becoming the best restaurants in Melbourne.
Maybe you’ve been to a Melbourne food festival and have noticed some interesting developments, or have been keeping your eye on food blogs in Melbourne and noticed a few eating and dining trends that are popping up. Which are your favourites and why are they so delicious?

Gumbo Kitchen for sure. Speaking of which, Merry Mardi Gras!
C’mon down tonight for the best Nawlins grub in Melbs: https://www.facebook.com/events/328197090625831/
I love that cajun style cuisine is taking off in Melbourne and also southern style bbq.
I’d label it as bar dining. But regardless the cuisine, its all about multiple small plates.
I love that Mexican food is taking off in a big way and I also love the new food trucks such as Gumbo Kitchen, Beatbox kitchen and taco truck etc, I just wish the conservative eastern suburb councils would let them have permits to come over the east side of town:(
I love some of the “pop up” restaurants around town. Melbournians love the latest crazes and a lot is word of mouth. It’s informal and you sort of feel like you’re part of a secret clique.
A mate & I are looking into doing our own pop up but don’t know where to start.
Thanks
