We all have an opinion on what comprises the greatest Melbourne suburbs. It could be great nightlife with bars and eateries – or perhaps a good neighbourhood to raise a family with a good high school and community. It could be it’s just the least expensive suburb to buy a house in Melbourne right now!
So if you’re new to Melbourne, what are the greatest suburbs in Melbourne which stand out to you? Parts of town you’d really love to live in? Let’s help everyone with where to live.
Everyone has different preferences – be it Box Hill or Fitzroy… what is Melbourne’s best suburb and why?

Fitzroy and Collingwood (i.e. Brunswick St/Smith St/Johnston St). Great variety in cuisines for restaurants/take-out/etc. Great variety in pubs and bars. Close to the city.
Definitely Fitzroy for the restaurants and bars, architecture, artists contributions to the community and the proximity to the city. Not to mention all of the characters!
Don’t know about the best but it is typical of the suburbs outside of Melbourne. You have to look around to find that most suburbs have unique and interesting places to share.
Take for instance one suburb that I lived in last year…Kilsyth.
Kilsyth you say. You would have to be joking! But seriously take a look at what I found when I went looking… and if you are up for a bit of fun and games check out the Kilsyth Centenary Pool Party, Fun and Games during the July School Holidays
Awesome stuff.
What’s in your own backyard you don’t know about?
Fitzroy and Collingwood! :D
Definitely Canterbury, Toorak, Malvern, Kew and Aramadale. They are the prettiest and have the nicest shopping strips. St Kilda and Carlton are good for hanging out in, eating, music and cafes.
Thank you for another fantastic post. Exactly where else could anyone get that type of facts in these a ideal way of writing? I’ve a presentation next week, and I’m on the appear for this kind of data.
The best suburb is WITHOUT DOUBT Olinda. Rural feel with the convenience of Melbourne.
Middle Park – beautiful old homes, on the beach, parks, including Albert Park lake, close to city and St Kilda and almost entirely untouched by modern development. Safe and family friendly too. Only downside is the price…
went through toorak and there was mansions all over the place! kews a nice place, but a bit far out and nothing really to do there. fitzroy there is alot of pugs and restaurants, close to the city so cant go wrong. depends what your into i guess
Kids took me to LaPorchetta for my birthday this year. Now Donvale really went up in my estimation! Loved it!
Speaking of Donvale, great little suburb in the Outer Eastern areas of Melbourne. BNuilt up but still got that fringe gum tree out in the bush feel about it.
Close to the Eastern Freeway and a short 40 minute drive down to my favourite beach! Frankston…but that another story :)
Carlton, Kew, Blackburn, Nunnawadding, Carlton, Surrey Hills, Prahran
All very nice and arty IMO :)
Elsternwick, 3185, is by far the best Bayside suburb! It used to be it’s own Town before joining Caulfield around 100 years ago, now it’s part of the City of Glen Eira, which also includes Carnegie, Murrumbeena & Bentleigh , which in my opinion are also very good suburbs.
Elsternwick is the “old” Caulfield , before the McMansions ruined Caulfield North & South, Elsternwick has beautiful old Victorian homes like Albert Park and also Edwardian ones like Malvern.
All roads in the Bayside suburbs lead to Elsternwick!
Would have to be Prahran for the eclectic mix of shops in Greville St….A sleeping beauty right now and considered the next Gertrude St!…We like to think so.
Richmond wins hands down! close to both abbotsford, collingwood & fitzroy (for ur cool bars/cafe) then a trip down chapel st windsor (for clubbing/bars) n st kilda is only 20mins away! oh not to mention Richmond as a suburb is amazing. very close knit suburbs once u get to know the locals
Berwick Village! Its secluded away from hustle & bustles of typical busy suburbs and yet you can find everything within 5pm radius! Its definitely a hidden ‘gem’ of South Eastern Suburb!
Hampton, Brighton best bayside suburbs in melb.
Collingwood and Fitzroy!
the right side of the yarra, do u really want to live in suburb that has its suburb with inerlopers that go there to get pissed then nick off, eg fitzroy, richmond and most city suburbs, the leafy eastern and south eastern corridor is the place to be, this is suported by price.
Camberwell, Surry Hills, Glen Iris, Malvern, Armadale, Mont Albert, Hawthorn, Cabterbury. these suburbs have class. many of the gentrification suburbs eg richmond, fitzroy, collingwood still have the stigma of the past as slums.
Yarraville, Seddon area. All sorts of restaurants, eateries, and then there’s The Sun theatre.
Yarraville the west side the best side.
Brunswick
any suberb no closer than 50klm from CBD
Carlton, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Brunswick, & St Kilda.
Kingsbury!! We moved here 13 years ago (kicking & screaming, I wanted to move back towards the city but couldn’t afford it) – However when we had kids I realised what a gem of a place this really is. Next to La Trobe Uni, tram on our doorstep, small shopping strip, short bus ride to reservoir stn, shopping centres, catholic and public secondary schools. Two primary schools within walking distance of everyone here. Bike tracks, parks and reserves all around – and a pretty quiet neighborhood with a diverse population! It’s got it all!
Armadale :)
Essendon
North Carlton, Brunswick and east Brunswick!
Geelong
