What is Melbourne’s worst shopping centre and why?

shopping_trolleyYou’ve spoken loud and clear on Twitter… the “best shopping centre” question earlier this week was obviously the wrong choice of words.

So let’s get down to what really matters here – warning other Melbourne residents about the worst shopping centres in Melbourne.

There’s a few obvious choices… but maybe you should ward others away from some local terrible areas as well.

Eastland. Always filled with bogans and teenagers. Also, northland, because of the bogan infestation.

Highpoint, which I will refer to nothing other than Knifepoint.

Everywhere you turn, the sound of lip-smacking as teenagers apply lip gloss and try to look classy while stuffing McDonalds fries into their mouth.

The entire centre is akin to a gauntlet run through all that’s wrong with bogans.

Westfield Airport West. ‘Food court’ is full of overweight suburban single mums and bogans wolfing down fast food. Gloria Jeans makes the worst (and most expensive) coffees in Melbourne. I once witnessed an awful, awful man shoving a half-eaten pie in a bakery assistant’s face and swearing loudly and extremely harshly because he’d found a piece of grisle in his pie. “You f***ing put it in your mouth and eat it” he barked at her. I feel dirty every time I go there.

Union Square, West Brunswick. There’s nothing there, basically. Lights on, nothing to buy.

Wherever Andew Bolt shops. He should have an intervention order on him.

Pushing the boundaries of the city limits but Karingal Hub has to be up there.

Fountain Gate

Scariest, fattest, rudest most uneducated customers on the planet. I thought chiko rolls died out in the 70′s, there they eat them for breakfat.

Though not Melbourne per se but because of the western suburban scum that has been transplanted there as clients of the Dept of Public Housing:- STOCKLANDS WENDOUREE(formerly Wendouree Village).
Wall to wall Bogans! Cargo pants, tattoos, epidemic obesity, cheap and nasty clothing, all of them just about. It’s almost worth it just to see!(Careful headlice are in plague proprtions there)So horrible it’s interesting.
I know it’s Ballarat but it’s the worst infestation in the state by far.

Westfield Doncaster. Well, the shopping might be great, but the parking is unbelievably bad. I lost an hour of my life in that carpark once (it took about 45 minutes to get OUT once we decided we weren’t likely to find a parking place) and I haven’t been back since. It’s a shame, because I used to quite like that shopping centre before their big improvement (you know, the one where they got rid of all the parking?).

I second that. I used to work there during my uni days and found out that a colleague on the sales floor smoked weed everyday just to get through the experience!

Westfield airport west.
Every second week a shop has shut down, and some new, trashy homewares or trampy clothes shop has opened. It’s full of [as stated before] overweight single suburban mums stuffing ther children’s faces full of maccas while they do their weekly Sams Warehouse grocery run.

Werribee Plaza has to be one of the most pedestrian unfriendly shopping centers there is.

Then you haven’t seen Sunshine Market Place on Harvester Road, Sunshine!!! But I agree with one of the comments before, all of the shopping centres are pretty much full of the same people…the centres might look different, they might be in different parts of Melbourne but the sort of people who go there are the same…

Watergardens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Full of mid-teen bimbos and general idiots, full of fast food and crappy stores. It’s terribly layed out too.

Chadstone. How can the largest shopping centre in the state not have a single proper bookshop?

The one in Endeavour Hills. Haven’t been there for a few years but it was tacky, yuk, and the food court had the worst choices.

I am going for Vermont South shopping centre. 4 hair dressers, 4 optometrists and a Coles. The floor is uneven and it’s full of Nanas who drive like maniacs, going the wrong way up one way car park lanes. Upside is I am a good 20 years younger than the average shopper so good to go there when I am feeling haggard.

Highpoint & Fountain Gate both suck. Watergardens is a good shopping centre :)

Watergardens is just awful but Gladstone Park is the absolute worst. Dimmeys is the best it’s got – it’s all downhill from there.

The Well in Camberwell – a shocking example of how a local council allows a planning permit for a bland, outer-suburban style shopping mall to be developed directly behind a functional, traditional high street. Badly designed, antiseptic atmosphere with hardly any decent shops (only two, Dymocks books and JB Hifi both of which were once on Burke Road). Really dull – in an area in bad bad need of something a bit funky to begin with. A true opportunity lost.

Keilor Downs would have to up there as one of the worst,. A deadbeat shopping centre at best. Followed closely by Watergardens. Go there on a Thursday/Friday night and you get the 19 yo bogan idiot crowd.
