Maybe it’s crime and theft rates, or maybe you think a suburb has been overrun by bogans – everyone has their own opinion on the worst suburbs in Melbourne.
Whether these suburbs deserve their bad reputation or not, everyone loves debating this topic – and it seems there’s a few contenders for the mantle of worst suburb in Melbourne. Whether it’s terribly poor infrastructure from a suburb which was seemingly constructed overnight, or a part of Melbourne which simply can’t get its crime rates under control, our awesome city still has a few less-than-desirable suburbs – but areas always seem to be stuck in the doldrums?
Which Melbourne suburb gets your vote as the worst, and why is it so dreadful? Sound off in the comments below.

Footscray. It is quite dangerous here. Lots or robbery and some selling drugs.
Footscray because of drugs and robbery. It is quite dangerous here.
Epping since there are always fights and gangs in here.
hi, im planning to move to melb from syd. I have no clue and no family in melb but I like the night life and culture. I have never ventured out passed the city. Looking for an affordable family friendly suburb. This site really makes it hard for me as just about every suburb in melb has been deemed junkie, hoon, hooker town… Having second thoughts.. Footscray, frankston and melton seem to be mentioned a lot. I come from western Sydney which is portrayed as gangland and violence but I never really felt unsafe. I actually had to stay in Footscray for work and I wandered the streets at night with no clue of the reputation it carries and I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.. I wonder how many of these claims are exaggerated.
north melb and flemington. abandoned buildings, grafitti, broken windows, housing comminsions ect. same can also be said anywhere on the way from fitzroy to resevior.
Look I’m going to sum up this whole arguments no need to post this much lol now listen the only ones of proof due to statistics the suburbs are coming in at 3rd is sunshine west sunshine what ever has the word sunshine is in 3rd 2nd u got dandenong coming in a draw with st auburns 1 st Broadmeadows that includes coolaroo medow heights Roxburgh park west meadows campbellfield Dallas cragieburn these areas are notorious for the drugs gangs supped up cars most common crimes are assults and house robberys we’ve allways had disadvantage youth in Broadmeadows that turn to drugs out of problems at home no jobs or simply lack ov boardem I lived in coolaroo over 20 years ago I still remember to not enter Broadmeadows dallas or campbellfield after dark spooky :S
look at the statistics. the north has the highest crime rates e.g. assault and methamphetamines cases. i believe the worst suburb in the north is west heidleberg followed by greensborough broadmeadows diamond creek jacana
Some of you on here seriously need to get yourself to a big city in the UK or USA to see what bad/worst really means !
Each suburb is called home to some one and not every one goes through the troubles of dealing with hoons, druggies, bogans and lads… every one is entitled to their own opinions, true??
SOUTH YARRA
Hisspotality replacing the values of hotel management and the outer middle suburban plus the outer middle class have caused suburbs everywhere to puke..The anticipated rise of nationalism or jingoism will feature but in reality, the real issues of contention will be cross classed viewpoints, aka the individual’s life perspective or lack of it. Add gentrification, easy finance, the cycle of gen x linked with their spoilt “parent ie the world war 2 war baby”,his son and daughter gen x and their grandchildren next gen, all repeating atoo closed arrogant know-all viewpoint. In addition too comfortable lifestyles, peer pressure, cold climate syndrome causing concentration only on corridor viewing down south, the same with the hot climate up north and all newspapers’ inciting of trivial issues but disguised by issues of an external base ie censorship of a changing overseas world..at least ten years computor banks worth of ensuring political, social and human interest stories are there to ensure continued employment for “journos”and a change of government. This aussie now smells. The roots of all this upheaval reside in the rebirth if you like, similar to the anzac recognition of a new australia, not the lower ranked country,it on the world stage had become by the tyranny of distance. The world came to australia in the 2000 through the olympics and other changes. That is when this social phenomena called occka the snob overtook occka the worker.Think about it this country needs to get humble and quick…in 2013
Sunbury, full of white trash goons, hard nosed bogons all of them.
the worst are norlane and corio near geelong and morwell near moe.they are just outside of melbourne but still they’re schiezenhausen.
A lot of the people posting on this forum clearly come from some pretty sheltered backgrounds or read too much Herald Sun or watch too much a Current affair if they believe that any of Melbourne suburbs are that bad. Sure places like Fottscray, Dandenong, Springvale, Broadmeadows, Roxburgh Park, Frankston etc have some problems and a bad element, but compared to the rest of the world including the western world it’s very safe. I have spent a lot of time in suburbs such as Footscray, Dandenong, Sunshine, St Albans, Frankston and Springvale and have never had any trouble or seen any trouble, now while I know it exsists you wouldn’t go to a rough area in other parts of the world like in the US or UK because even in the daytime you would be putting yourself at serious risk of robbery or assault or worse. Melbourne has no no go areas and nothing even close to it, you should all be proud of this instead of running areas down and damaging there reputation and that of the families who live there.
I dont know what Anon was on about but its not keilor that is bad it is keilor downs and east keilor that are bad, not keilor itself
forget the eastern surburbs dandenong is beautiful compared to footscray
-easy to buy drugs
-drunken people
-huge unemployment
-robberies
-bashings all above daily bases even tho theres a camera all over the streets
- a few murders during thd year
footscray no doubt everyday people drunk of their face on the main streets, fights, robbings, huge supply of heroin, ice and speed. syringes on the streets broken bottled people even sleeping over night on benches.
As a teenager growing up and everything you get to know the good and the bad people, I have gotten to know all the wrong ones; gangs, thief’s, drug dealers, rebels, and just people looking for trouble, I dont care what anyone thinks but these are defiantly some of the worst suburbs:
Keilor and surrounding areas within 5kms, Sydnhem and surrounding, Melton and surrounding, Glenroy and surrounding have gone terribly down hill, Sunshine, Footscray, Saint Albans, Dandenong, Epping, Fitzroy, Avondale Heights, Camberfield, Noble Park and surrounding, Ginifer, Hurstbridge and surrounding, Flemington is a no go there are lots lots more i could name. Another thing people do not understand is that there are no safe suburbs anywhere, each suburb has its own hooligans etc, and that will always be like that, I just named some suburbs that i know have the worst type of people, not saying if you live in these suburbs your a bad person, hell i lived in 3 of the worst suburbs in Melbourne.
What i would tell anyone dont look in moving into any suburb with more then 20k from the city they are usually the ones full of drug dealers, rebels and gangs. Anything closer to the city you will find the everyday bum, or lad these days trying to start trouble, but usually they are harmless.
During the day most of these suburbs are good but when it hits past 6 o’clock you want to keep an extra eye out.
As long as you dont get any of these types of people jealous, either by smoking or on your phone they wont bother you, but once you start flashing things around that when trouble starts, I know I might sound like a idiot here but that is what these people look for. Dont get me wrong you might always bump into a random who is looking for trouble for no reason, but you cant get away from that, thats just reality.
Also never walk the streets looking like a easy target, what i mean by this is, dont go around with your head down and no confidence, you want to look as confident and stand your ground if you get approached, thats what these type of people look for.
Not a suburb of Melbourne, but a country town – Ballarat.
Did you ever wonder where the original scum of the west, ‘bodgies and widgies’ went a generation ago? Well Ballarat it was!
There they married, got tattoos and learned drug dealing, violent crime and ‘glassing’.
Cops are notoriously corrupt and everyone else is on the take.
Melton hands down
I live in Pascoe Vale and love it…And Broadmeadows up the road plus Glenroy which has its bad areas but really Not that bad you know ! Great shopping centre n lots of variety etc.Cinema complex which is great n once your there you could be any where..
Worst has to be Doveton , Frankston in the day is nice but u gotta get outa there when night falls
hampton park has to be one of the worst just drive true the suburb and ull see
MELBOURNE MUZZA CENTRAL
HAMPTON PARK
Seriously folks! The Caulfield area is going down hilll very fast, and it’s partly St Kilda’s fault!
The gentrification of St Kilda, has pushed all of the druggies( ironically, many from rich families in Caulfield & Brighton) into the old family homes of Caulfield. GLENHUNTLY is the worst part of Caulfield & is alot like Dandenong(even same postcode district ,3161, 3163 & 3174 are Dandenong District Postcodes ).
Brighton could follow suit a little bit, but has the more UPMARKET Bayside Postcode(shared with Frankston & Albert Park etc), Brighton will become more like Elwood was like in the 1980′s , not really bad, but not really good either. East Bentleigh is more like the old upmarket, family friendly Caulfield of the 1960′s & ’70′s, Caulfield’s heyday has passed & is now becoming a slum.
Burwood is also becoming more rough, even Camberwell is becoming more like old Richmond.
Combination of the gentrification of the old inner sububs & housing un-affordability in the old Middle suburbs( like Caulfield & Camberwell) is turning many of the old middle suburbs into slums, despite having expensive private schools(but even convicted criminals went to Caulfield Grammar-Skase,McVillian etc).
There is no such thing and the question is offensive and rather tabloid don’t you think?
Um south yarra of course
Craigieburn has to be the worst. The hoons and the bogans have made life unbearable. Cannot even go to the local shopping centre anymore. Am desperate to move out.
West Heidelberg, lived there for around 5 years. Had car and bike stolen, machete fights in the street and more.
I don’t know why some people are saying Reservoir is bad? Lived there for 10 years + never had a problem, very quiet.
I have lived in the Maribyrnong/Footscray area my whole life and I have never had any problems at all with anything.
Footscray is nice and close to the city and have never been harassed or annoyed once when walking down the street. There is violence and crime in every neighbourhood! You cannot stop that. Footscray station is now one of the safest with PSO’S patrolling until early hours of the morning and the station is well lit up and many police around the place.
I think Frankston/Cranboune would be the worst area. Full of bogans and trouble. Or anywhere in the south really with all these sexual attackers prowling the street!
Footscray is only bad if you go and look for trouble.
I’ve been living in the heart of Footscray for nine months now, I’m a student studying mental health and working full time. I must admit, if I knew Melbourne better when I moved here initially I probably wouldn’t have picked Footscray as my ideal suburb, but it’s worked out for me so far and I’m pretty happy. Plus it’s kind’ve exciting with the changes they are making to the station and stuff.
I’ve never once had any trouble walking around at night or any time for that matter, occasionally get people asking me for money but you get that in any populated suburban area.
The worst for me would probably be Coburg, it’s yuck and dodgy. Or Sunshine, I try to avoid Sunshine.
PRESTON, TO MANY WHORES TRYING TO PASS THEM SELF OFF AS RESPECTFUL GIRLS
St Kilda. Wankers.
37. Footscray +7 $$
The most affordable suburb in the top 50 (by a mile), Footscray rates higher than many traditionally more highly regarded suburbs including blue‑blooded Canterbury (48), super-expensive Middle Park (61) and the middle-class heartland Malvern East (62)
http://theage.domain.com.au/greater-melbourne/the-list-melbourne-suburbs-liveability-ranking-revealed-20111122-1nrv2.html
300. Chirnside Park -22 $$
At just over 32 hectares, outer-northeast Chirnside Park is by far our largest suburb. An area of small farms and some houses, it is ranked worst for proximity to schools in part because of its sheer size.
301. Rowville -8 $$
302. Keilor Park -2 $$
303. Narre Warren North -3 $$$$
304. Deer Park -8 $
305. Dandenong South +3 *
306. Craigieburn -9 $
307. Sydenham -1 $$
308. Kilsyth South +2 $$
309. Wandin -7 *
Just past Mount Evelyn (214), Wandin is the worst suburb in Melbourne for proximity to public transport, although that proximity is measured by distance, not travel time: on Wandin’s uncongested roads, the drive to Lilydale Station typically takes less than 10 minutes.
310. Campbellfield -5 $
311. Keilor Lodge +3 *
312. Sunshine North -14 $$
313. Bayswater North -2 $$
314. Hallam -1 $
Somebody has to be on the bottom of the list, and it’s Hallam, which is relatively hilly, has good proximity to trains plus moderate open space, but which falls down most notably on culture, schools, shopping and tree cover.
Hawthorn’s definitely the worst in my opinion :(
Hawthorn is the worst suburb
Hampton Park and narre warren.!!
Flemington worse place ever
MELTON
I think Footscray and Glenroy Broadmeadows and Dandenong are definitely the worst junkies everywhere cars get stolen in Glenroy all the time . Lalor Thomastown are normal compared to Footscary .
Point Cook/Hoppers Crossing is worst. Bums buy the cheap houses around here and everyone takes drugs. You cannot go to Hoppers Crossing staition after 7:00PM – its the drugies/rapists playground.
oh and one more thing im not racist and HATE racism because theirs no point and ive got quite a few immigrant mates who are really nice and had great jobs and positions back in their country but were sadly chased out of their own homes so we shouldnt jugde because what if that happened to you (hearing news that the government is after you and they want to kill you or put you in the penitentary for life but theres a truck about to head off to the refugee camp in kenya) WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE!
Well i think that the their isnt a worst suburb in melbourne because i reckon all suburbs have a bit of racism, drub abuse, violence and stuff but we australians need to pull our socks up build a bridge and get over it because there are bad people all over the world and they we all eventually get caught or die. But the worst suburb for me if i HAD to choose would be broadmeadows with the gangs and people with ugly but fixed up cars having drag races at 2 in the morning keeping me up which is why i moved to werribee and never looked back because most of the time its nice and quite.
Absolute worst is North Sunshine – low income, high proportion of welfare dependents, highest percentage of kids getting meals at primary school.
Melbourne worst suburb is Wheelers Hill which is a lot of white people racist to immigrant, dangerous, violent, a lot of hoons and burgalry. We should stay away of them and better live and stay in non-white suburb
I lived in Mornington for a few years and loved it, but caught the tran from…….you guessed it, Frankston. Always entertaining. Always.
It has cleaned up considerably over the last few years though.
Better than Perth at any rate
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!! IF YOU CAN CHOOSE A MID-TO UPPER CLASS SUBURB, AS THE UNSTABLE/DESPERATE FOLKS JUST CANT AFFORD TO LIVE IN THOSE AREAS,
Stef sorry I do believe Gisborne is a beautiful place but its country victoria, To far from metro melbourn0e to count (:
I grew up in St Albans, & I am not worried about anywhere in Melbourne I go except trhe Footscray mall near Centrelink
Noble Park
Dandenong (not to be confused with the Dandenong Ranges which is really very beautiful!)
Some parts of Frankston
Narre Warren
St Albans
Sunshine
I would advise renting a smaller house/apartment but in a better suburb – by better suburb I mean one that has relatively low crime rates; better access to rail transport, shops, good public schools, parks/reserves . It is awful travelling by tram unless it is a short commute. Bad traffic can make travelling by tram a nightmare.
oh and werribee is pretty bad too
St Albans, Sunshine, Epping, Melton, Sunbury, Deer Park. I’m glad no one’s mentioned Gisborne because it’s a nice little town. I’ve been living there for 6 in a half years and it’s one of the safest surburbs in Victoria in my opinion.
Worst Victorian Suburbs are in all White Australian Suburbs which is full of racist against immigrant, dangerous, and a lot of vandalism such as in Ferntree Gully, Ringwood, Rowville, Camberwell, Hawthorn, northern Suburb, and in country side of melbourne, etc
It is true there is a small percentage of “scum” in affluent areas, usually the rooming houses and other government funded abodes are full of these, however the reality is there is a high percentage of “scum” in the areas that are not affluent. If I had my way, they would be compounded and sterilised in the “outback” where they could build much needed infrastructure. They would give rather than take. Also agree you frequently here them talking about jail, and drugs, wherever they are. Jail is taking too. These people give nothing to society. They are psychopaths and psychopaths are parasites. Still the government has allot to answer for funding their existence of crime and providing no real help to those that want it.
Ok heres is a reality check- If you think bogans & druggies just stay in the scummy cheap suburbs you are so wrong, There could be someone out the front of your mansion in Brighton shooting up smack in there unreged 1984 Holden Camira right now lol, Footscray wins this one hands down, Where else can you overhear ppl talking in the dole que about just getting out of jail & needing to bash a dealer for there smack coz they cant wait a day to get there dole check? I have lived all over Melbourne, yep everywhere from St Albans to Dandenong to Frankston etc but also from Elwood to Blackrock to Brighton……………. Footscray is one place you REALLY need to be paranoid about saftey!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment to Kerry. I live in the CBD and would not recommend it to anyone. It is a cesspool of drunks and drug addicts, those sleeping around the CBD and those that come to the CBD. As you stated, the police do nothing. And that extends to the Department of Human Services and ALL Government Departments. These low life human beings are encouraged to have children, take drugs, get drunk and committ other depraved acts, including violence thieving and screaming at people. Police are busy doing nothing as are most public servants who are employed to serve the public. The amount of begging for “drugs” is prolific. The only suburbs that are free of these depraved human beings I know of are Kew Toorak Malvern Hawthorn Armadale etc. having lived in those types of areas. Unfortunately if you don’t have the money to live in those areas you will be subjected to the repeated human beings. Stay safe. I admire you for your boundary and commitment to expose and try to stop what is happening to our society.
Pakenham is fast becoming one of the worst places to be with certian adults so called( mothers ) taking in young children and intoducing them to a world of smoking, drinking and taking illegal drugs. Police do nothing to help those that are trying to parent there children, instead just sitting back and allowing these irresponsable, disgrceful people to destroy good familys and the law, well all i can say is it needs to be changed scumbags that supply young kids with drugs, cigerttes and alchol should be locked up and then at least there children and other peoples children can have a chance at living a good life . These people also seem to have young kids shop lifting and committing crimes i have to wonder is it for these scummy (adults) who encourage kids to take drugs and commit crime doing it so they dont have to support themselves they prefer to sit on there fat asses and let these poor young kids ruin there lives to support these hopless adults…SHAME ON YOU PEOPLE ….Pakenham residents we need to take a stand and let these sick people know it will not be tollerated alert other parents if you think certain houses are allowing kids to destroy there lives if we all communicate as responsabile adults we can have a chance to stop this before more kids get destroyed… check where your kids are going and meet the parents before you allow your children to attend peoples homes its not always easy some of these hopless mother put on very good act when you meet them KEEP YOUR EYES AND EARS OPEN THE NICEST CHILDREN FROM THE BEST OF HOMES CAN BE TAKEN DOWN BY THESE SICK PEOPLE GO WITH YOUR GUT FEELING IF YOU HAVE THE SMALLEST DOUBT ABOUT A HOUSE YOUR LETTING YOUR CHILD ATTEND DO YOUR HOMEWORK ….our children are precious
Cranbourne, Craigieburn, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Packenham, Carolina Springs etc these type of suburbs have nothing, total boredom no wonder the local kids get up to no good, just houses clumped together out in the middle of nowhere. If and when the economy takes a proper dive these suburbs will become ghettos in the future.
East Keilor is a dump. Full of wannabees and absolute deadbeats. the best thing about it is the road out!
The worst suburb in Melbourne , uno 25 years ago i would have said Dovton or North Dandenong around menzies avenue for obvious reasons , but its funny ive found myself up in WooriYallock , like any place when i first came to this area i thought it was such a great place , the mountains the fishing going shooting , being able to stop on the Warburton hwy and talk to someone going the other way and talk for 10 to 15 minutes before another car would come , yeh that was great ,but people sooned worked out that for what they could pay for a house in dandenong or endevour hills or even lilydale they could buy four houses in this area , so from this came a whole heap of people that were lower middle class coming up here and as with anyone from the lower classes they got an attitude thinking that they were better than everyone else , these peoples children have grown up with this same attitude but its getting worse and worse , uno now i live in a place were the car you drive means what kind of person you are , uno and all the things that go with that , you see if i was a car i would be a beaten up old ford falcon kc gxl but with the original running gear finely tuned , its pretty routine around here now everywhere you look drugs drugs drugs bullies people standing over people , look i dont know if this is the worst suburb ib melbourne , but it has changed so fast and not for the better , i think people have changed everywhere and its got nothing to do with suburbs , its the people in them.
If you thought St Albans was Melbourne’s asshole, Kings Park is the festy hemeroid hanging off of it.
thats supposed to be mates russ
hi guys i grew up in cockatoo great place but had its moments lived, in port mebourne for thirty years , it can get weird a lot of dudes got rich overnight but it has improved still i would not go bay st after 9 pm except if with a few moments , every place has problems it should be the weak as piss cops jobs to clean it up propley russ
I live in a place called kurunjang in melton have lived there for the last six years I have two acres of land a nice home good neighbours its affordable close to big shopping centres train station and schools and only 30k to the centre of melbourne although many people look down on melton its a great place to live
Comment to Mark. Congratulations on making an intelligent comment. It makes a change from all the rubbish on this thread.
@Lia
This isn’t the place to find out about Melbourne’s suburbs. Melbourne is a great place to raise kids and it can offer you whatever you want generally.
If you like where you live then great. If you think there’s more then work out what you want – schools, restaurants, cafes, easy access to the CBD, to be near the water etc. Work out how much you want to pay and can afford to pay and go and visit the places that meet what you want. Look at some houses and walk around the area, go to the parks, shops, cafes etc. Look at the roads, train timetable and MySchool website – go talk to the schools. Look at suburb profiles on domain.com.au. Talk to people you feel comfortable with and find out what they think.
A virtual room of angry people with numerous agendas and prejudices is not the place for you to make a serious decision from. Remember, every city on the planet has places you wouldn’t want to go to – media and these type of forums tend to amplify the bad side and ignore the more numerous positives.
Hope this helps .. good luck.
I think you all have it wrong , I have lived up here in LaunchingPlace , I dont think anybody has any idea what it is like to go down the line and hear people saying “the yarra vally is a really nice place” it use to be its not now , for some reason over the last 16 years give or take this area has turned into the biggest scum drug dealing drug addict area out , drug dealers flourish here , there are plenty of police driving up and down the highway pulling over the local kids for having a bald tire or some other stupid thing while just down any side street and i mean any they could find a house occupied by a maybe 41 year old drug dealer being visited by half of the kids that are meant to be at the local high school , not to mention the fact that any lower middle class family can move up here now and buy 2 or 3 properties for the price of 1 house anywhere else , honestly what a joke , if you want to be a druggy and never have to worry about laws , just cruise up to the Valley .
Me, my husband and 3 kids just moved over not long ago because we were told Melbourne is a lovely place to live and bring up a family. We are currently living in Craigieburn but after reading all these comments im scared for my family especially my kids. Did we make the right move?
Comment to Yvette … Very true amusing yet tragic… On the weekend those ferals you talk about take a special trip to the CBD to celebrate and indulge in their ferility… Though mainly the ‘blokes’… Staggering down the streets drunk and on drugs(saved up for this special occassion) screaming and staring at feral ‘sheillas’ … Insanity is prolific … Unlike you I prefer to be away from all forms of feral, give me the quiet tree lined streets of the inner eastern suburbs anyday…
Can easily identify the worst suburbs from centre link and public housing and all other welfare statistics… including jail… Add these variables together and shazam… The worst suburbs… St Kilda around Fitzroy Street would have to be the worst, and the surrounding streets nearby… These people (are they people?) are too stupid (drug induced) to hold a drivers license yet alone get a car through various means…
Sydenham…commodore hoon after commodore hoon and half wit truck owners who don’t give a stuff about 50kph limits
Comment to Michael… Agree… Used to visit feral family in Franston as a child, returned in later years and Franston still feral… You won’t find then by the beach reading Shakespeare… You will however find them in their ferals shipping centers perusing polyester clothes…
LMAO at Helen Wolf who said Frankston is great, but never felt safe in Elwood! Spent my first 25 years in Frankston, and the last 2 years in Elwood. You cant walk through Frankston at night, the worst you have to worry about in Elwood is being blinded by the sun reflecting off the botoxed forheads of parents drinking lattes and pushing 3 wheeled strollers!
melton
CRANBOURNE full of stoners and crack heads
What really has not been addressed in this forum is crime… Which is a factor in identifying Melbournes worst suburbs… In areas with high concentrations of government housing and government funded housing and other low cost housing such as rooming houses you will find high levels of blue collar crime compared to areas that don’t have such concentrations…blue collar crime comes in various forms including robberies – houses and people- drug dealing, drug addicts, prostitution, violence and arson.. Highest concentration of rooming houses in St Kilda, where some people from prison end up… The white collar criminals stay in their gated mansions out of sight.
Comment to Anon… Yes true…though few… Tragic yet true is the fact that if born into a feral family likely end up feral… Some serendipitous events whereby poor end up rich, not many… The way the system works… Anyway… Go for walk now and experrience absolute ferals in CBD…
comment to Lee-Anne…yes, but you might find that some of the polyester tattoo pierced types that frequent the city, grew up in leafy middle-class suburbs and are in their rebellion stage.
comment to Anon… Have lived and/or worked in areas I comment on and thus researched… Broadford/Seymour/Shepparton areas… Pockets of working class good people and pockets of absolute ferals, especially Seymour where there is a high concentration of government housing… Out in their finery in polyester clothes displaying tatoos and piercings and new babies … Kew/Malvern/Hawthorn/Toorak mainly old money and civilised with no need to display wealth … South Yarra/Port Melbourne/Brighton new money that think expensive car and house and clothes equals culture … These types of people are pretentious … CBD streets full of polyester tattooed pierced baby pusher ferals out for the day from deliverance suburbs …
Comment to Lee-Anne… I was being ironic.
I suggest you do bit more research before you make blanket comments describing suburbs.
Anon… You must be born and bred in one of those suburbs fit for the movie Delliverance!
Defiinetly Kew. This dirty, fiithy suburb can only be improved by a large boost in public housing.
Werribee
Pt cook
Footscray
Sunshine
Deer park
Reservoir
Tullamarine
Springvale
Richmond
Noble park
Narre warren
The list goes on…
The Eastern Suburbs are the worst and the City Suburbs are the best.
I don’t understand why everyone is dissing flemington and kensington, but when it comes to racing season you guys are all over us in excitement and appreciation! Why can’t you treat flemington and kensigton like that all year round, not just in november! They put the race in flemington for a reason, because it is one of the best suburbs in melbourne!
The people in the eastern suburb are just judgemental
Comment to Vigilante… Your post is amusing yet true! I would extend your observation to where there is a high concentration of welfare and public housing and once the detention centre is built then steralise them… I live in the CBD where there is a high concentration of 1. Feral single mothers and de facto boyfriends pushing pram. 2. Junkies and alcoholics. 3. Those recently let out of jail… All either in for the day after catching train from areas with high concentration of welfare/public housing… It is madness to let these people breed … Walk around the CBD and be guaranteed to be asked for money and cigarettes… If you refuse expect a not so nice comment… There are some good people on welfare and in public housing, yet not many… Anyway … Can’t stand them… Spend welfare cheque on drugs drink trinkets tatoos and piercings rather than feed themselves or baby…
Melton South definitely. Where everyone drives unregistered vehicles without a licence, after starting their breathalyser key start Commodores. More liquor barns than food shops. A physical workout means carrying your slab of Woodstock bourbon home on your shoulders (after cracking one on the footpath outside said liquor barn…..) Dont bother locking your car if you park at the station, at least the car wont get damaged from the break ins. If only there was a way to stop the druggies coming from Footscray by train then stealing a car from the station when their “business” is done…………….The whole area definitely needs fencing in. Better still, turn the whole area into a Detention Centre. It will improve the area and save money to be spent on the new Naura facility………
Lived in Kew most of my life … Those that denigrate such areas that contain civilized and cultured people that work for their existence rather than steal for it, are evidently jealous…
Having lived most of my life in the inner eastern suburbs, and unfortunately lived in the outer suburbs at times I would not wish to live anywhere other than the inner eastern suburbs… I don’t care if they are infiltrated with snobs, as snobs don’t committ violent crimes and hang around the streets on drugs begging for money for their next hit… The worst suburbs are those close to the CBD that have a high concebtration of government and government funded housing and include Footscray Richmond Firzroy St Kilda and North Melbourne… Stay away from ALL suburbs containing high concentrations of public housing … For yes there are pleasant people there, however in the main they are the worst of the worst …
After living in various suburbs… St Kilda, rowville, mount waverley, Cranbourne, Brighton, Hampton and gardenvale… The worst is St Kilda. Closely followed by Mount waverley… House in Mount waverley broken into on several occasions…
Haha this is funny, You would think with many many trashy suburbs suggested that 80% of Melbourne is Bogan with the 20% being decent.who is writing on here the 80% or 20% jk
I think frankston and footscray are by far the worst there was 1 person who said franks ton was a nice suburb…ha ha what a joke! its full of 16 year old girls with kids, and the crime and violence is just appalling, My brother and friends were walking down the street and got king hit by 4 guys. Its dirty and dangerous.
and footscray, well enough said its a multi cultural version of frankston and dandenong combined
Ok, I have lived in all four corners of Melbourne (Sunshine, Laverton, Cragieburn, Berwick and now Mitcham!!), and this is what I think: FOOTSCRAY, DANDENONG, SPRINGVALE, SUNSHINE WEST, ST ALBANS, LAVERTON, BROADMEADOWS, THOMASTOWN, ALTONA NORTH and probably CHIRNSIDE PARK. So basically there are patches everywhere, but most of the bad reputation is the inner western suburbs. Most others that have been said are bad in comparison to surrounds, but these would be the worst for many reasons- drugs, hoons, violence, etc. Footscray has the highest number of random stabbings, to give a clue! Having said all that, there are some bloody nice areas of Melbourne too!
the best is deffently Keilor, worst is Footscray, Sunshine, Melton and Frankston
In other words AUSTRALIA!!!
Kooyong – far to many ppl driving around i BMW’s and other flashy cars ( myself included)..
melbourne is a rubbish dump all together. melbourne cbd is discusting. saint kilda happens to be the worst. hardly a weekend without shootings, bashings and murders. prostitution and drugs, pathetic. low lives travelling melbourne streets, homeless people spread all over the city.
Noble park is pretty bad, only been stabbed once, just dont wear ur good runners if u dont wanna have em taken off ya:)) no joke, but in dandenong even cops dont pull people over, too scared too, haha,
BLUE HORIZONS ESTATE IN PAKENHAM, THE WORST DEVELOPMENT ON THE EAST SIDE.
South Melbourne – there is the huge spot of Bogan’s habitat. See on Youtube eRPXcecP7dY
does anyone have any comments about melton, melton west and melton south. my daughter is saying it’s the worst place. I believe it doesn’t matter where you live the drugs, violence, threats etc are everywhere some place’s you see and hear about it more that others. my daughter won’t go to school due to fear but it seems like she’s just more aware of what goes on now. can anyone help?
This is a song I made a song. If you want to hear the original search Toddrick Hall on YouTube and click one called McDonalds Drive thru song.
I wanna, run from Dandy and Sunshine don’t forget West Heide your fried. Running from Preston I’m in a hurry, May die in Narre Warre, Wanna escape from them sprinting from Me-l-ton. Now tell me tell me do you hear that? Cause I don wanna hear crap. I don’t wanna come back. To these crap holes to these crap holes.
Dallas – Broadmeadows’ asshole.
Was at home in the suburb I live in*
Every suburb has their ups and downs. There are always hidden druggies and robbers, killers and drunkens. I find even my own suburb which is quite safe, scary at times. Over 2 months ago a old man was at home in his suburb and a man came in with a knife. Luckily the old man ascaped unharmed. Western Suburbs are a downer too.
I’m a musician and out and about at night a lot but have not had any bad experiences anywhere in Melbourne (knock on wood). We go to Victoria St a lot (close to corner of Hoddle) to get food after midnight but have no qualms about the area.. it’s actually way dodgier during the day when the druggies and pushers are wheelin and dealin… The only hazard I’ve ever experienced there after midnight is cops doing their rounds and getting checked randomly. They scour the place after midnight like no tomorrow… keeps the druggies/pushers at bay I guess.
Love Melbourne.. it’s a safe city compared to other big cities in the world.
people say reservoir and the likes of preston and epping are dangerous or unsafe, it is this stereotypical misjudgement of everyone in those suburbs that make it look bad, everyone is normal people some with worse off backgrounds than others, due to drugs or alcohol, however it is the posh people who brand these people thugs who generally get hurt as they disrespect them making others feel unworthy, which should never happen through judgement of wealth, position or location.
All of them.
Terrible city.
Another vote for Sunbury. Thugs, Alcoholics, Mentally Ill people left untreated, vandalism, assault, fights, abuse, Dog attacks, animal cruelty, alcoholism, vandalism! I’ve seen it all here in just 4 years. Coming from the EAST it’s been a total shock.
Thanks John.
You nearly got the point – it’s because it’s full of THE WORST Victorians. And the worst from every other state in Australia. Plus a few from overseas. And every other state is grateful for that.
Yeh,
because its full of Victorians . . .
Worst suburb of Melbourne?
Definitely the Gold Coast.
Melton. simple.
langy
sunshine
st albans
franga
pake
dande
are the worst i have come across
langy
sunshine
st albans

dande
are the worst i have come across
Dandenong, Broadmeadows, Footscray, St Albans, Frankston, Narre warren, Toorak and Sunshine are what i think the most scummiest places in Victoria
Steve,
Could not agree more, and Melbournians are the worst drivers in the world. The greatest thing to ever come out of Victoria is the Hume Hwy !
It is not any suburb but Melbourne is far the worst city in Australia!! Full of selfish arrogant up themselves that there world is the best they are a waste of space then you notice Queensland on how completely different there lifestyles are compared to Melbourne the scummy city!!!!!!!!!!!
Frankston is by far the worst suburb, every where you look there are 14 year olds with a baby and pregnant again, chain smoking ciggarettes that they have scabbed off passer bys. I spent a lot of time in that area and no matter what, something always happened being there, whether it was happening to me or I was witnessing it. Easily the scummiest place on earth particularly the pines area, the shopping centre and the station. I lived in Dandenong from when I was very young until I was 18 and it is not as bad as it seems, yes there are certain areas worse than others there but in general I have not had anything happen and I live in Cranbourne North now and it is a nice area but from what i’ve heard it is more Cranbourne West where there is trouble. I hate Footscray and the city too.
St albans, Deep Park all areas surrounding are by fast the worst. Take a gang from Frankston put it in the west, watch what will happen. Put a gang fron the west in Frankston west will take over. I have seen people been killed by axes, house parties destroyed, gate crash a party then while the birthday song is going start abusing the family, next min punches kicks chairs dj equipment anything been thrown. Take everything from the house and gone. Alot of these kids are not in poverty they have a choice to be somebody and do something with their life. They just choose to do what they do because they know no better, bad influence music quick money.
I have seen the lot kidnapping, ransome, you will get bashed for asking for a
Cigarette if you ask at the wrong place and wrong time. Cop cars been stolen cops, cops
been hit. If there is a gang fighting and police turn up both sides turn on police, run to the car with weapons hitting and throwing thing at the police car. Drugs is out of control, where do you think most drugs are from? The west owners of the houses in other suburbs are from the west.
St albans Kings Park Deer Park Sunshine are by faar the worst. The amount
of cars that are stolen is crazy, just look it next time you are speaking to your insurance. company. Police helicopters are out all day everyday.
melton south
most of the western suburbs are dangerous at night
No doubt Cranbourne-Home of the Bogan.
You name the suburb, I either lived there, nearby or have worked in the area. The worst areas are:
Hawthorn
Caulfield
Camberwell
Balwyn
Toorak
Why? Because all those stuck up toffy nosed kids go into the less affluent suburbs, do their thing and return home to their rich mummies and daddies who hire the best lawyers to get them off their criminal activities.
Money buys innocence.
Have never ventured west (except on the way to the country via hwy or freeway) – so cannot really comment. Frankston itself is not as bad as what people say – with the exception of Kananook and the pines.
Have checked out Hampton Park – most depressing suburb, I have ever witnessed, guessing lots of precription drug takers there.
Don’t know why some comments have referred to Toorak and Brighton as the worst, generally have found them both friendly people and nice amenities with good taste (albeit expensive).
The worst suburb I have ever witnessed in Melbourne suburbs is Noble Park – just horrific beyond words – mentally unstable nut cases raving, drug addicts – pin-eyed and watching everyone and just plain filthy with rubbish with lots of grey concrete and darkness – uggghh !
Wo0 my suburb or the surrounding ones have not been mentioned apart from being called tree huggers :P
The worst suburbs to be, under the below
West: Melton, Deer Park, St Albans, Sunshine, Braybrook, Footscray, Altona, Laverton, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Sydenham, Taylors Lake, Sunbury and Carolina Springs
East: Ringwood, Boronia, Richmond and Glen Waverley
South: Dandenong, Cranbourne, Doverton and Frankston
North: Brunswick, Preston, Heiderleigh, Epping, Lalor, Thomastown and Broadmeadows
It would have to be St Albans
I gotta say Fitzroy, Northcote, actually anywhere there’s hipsters. Lets say the entire of Greater Melbourne, anywhere they mince about with their crappy tattoos n beards and ankle freezing jeans
Dandenong, the pines (Frankston North), Nobal Park, Geelong, St Kilder
Hi guys, I moved to Warrnambool in Feb 2012 from Brisbane for family reason.
It’s a nice peaceful place, but sometimes too peaceful and I can pretty easily get over some of the people’s mentality here.
Sometimes I miss the city, but I’m DEFINITIVELY not going to live in Melbourne (although I like some things about it).
Can anyone give me their honest feedback about GEELONG and surroundings, considering I’m not looking to commute to Melbourne and hoping to find the following:
-Cheap/ affordable 2 BDR UNIT to rent before buying (under 250K)
-Safe streets with not many bogans/ junkies/ housos
-Good state schools for my son (he’s 7 now)
-Events, Festivals and things to do on the weekend without too much money or free to beat boredom
-Not a lot of traffic like in Melbourne.
Do you think Geelong may have what I have?
Honest genuine replies only.
No judgemental/ criticism/ offensive comments, but please just what you can really share from personal experience.
Thanks to all.
It has got to be Blackburn. It’s such a scum hole. I know a friend who got bashed up outside the shopping area. It’s messed up.
I love how people put down suburbs and certain people (like immigrants). NHonestly ppl can not be more raciest. just because a suburb has a lot of immigrants doesn’t meant they are the reason a suburb is bad, there are a lot more factors to consider. I live in coburg and I am the daughter of an immigrant, my father came from Greece more than 20 yrs ago & has worked his ass off ever since, providing the best for us. Most immigrant i have come across (not all greeks) are just hardworking people or families trying to make something of themselves or support their family.
Just because someone is an immigrant doesn’t mean they are a bad person, it is a small number of people in that group that give everyone else a bad name, just like it is when it comes to a suburb. just because there are a few bad ppl in a suburb doesn’t mean that the whole place is bad. as i stated before i have lived in Coburg for over 15 years and love it, love that is it so multicultural and that it’s close to the city, great access to transport and the variety of food etc. Honestly, don’t judge a suburb (or person) before you know something about them.
Footscray is not so ‘dangerous’ anymore! Yes it has its unsavoury types but you will see the same sorts in St Kilda, Richmond, Fitzroy, Brunswick – basically a lot of the trendy areas.
The station has been modernised and there is constant security presence which is working is a great deterrence for crime.
Also, the hipsters have moved in – I think it’s scaring off the junkies!
Funky cafes, kitch stores, Savers and a number of Broadsheet write-ups has brought in a new demographic.
2//06/2012
I’m sick of reading about stupid stereotypes. According to the last comment, I live in the middle of the ghetto of Melbourne drugs gangs (etc). The reality is I live in a friendly neighbourhood, which is rapidly gentrifying and is one of the fastest appreciating suburbs over the past decade.
Worst suburbs:
Lalor: discusting. Saw unemployed youth parked in a handicap zone outside Safeway, smoking with bum cracks showing and tatty clothes. There was one kid that looked less than 14.
Boronia: i hate this place! Scum Of the earth!!! Unemployed mums having baby after baby- “close your legs!”. Makes me sick! Hitting the OP shops crying poor but somehow they have the latest commodore! They never wanna be an honest taxpayer!
Lilydale: Bogan town! What a pretty feral place! Plenty of fat overweight country bumkins that look like racist southern cross tattooed aussies.
Looks like Bogartz is from one of these suburbs . . . .
WANKERS
Toorak, Armadale, Glen Iris, Mont Albert, Deepdene ……… because the people living here have filthy minds ……… you get a glare when you wish someone good morning ………
Hey why is every one saying toorak is a bad suburb? I live there its beautiful.
When I was young, I lived in the western suburbs, Laverton, and through teenagehood, I lived in Narre Warren, both renound for poor people, bogans, hoons. Then I head into the city, and you see just as many poor people, drunken bogans and so on. Every suburb have their bad eggs, living in various countries proves the same thing. In todays society, many people aren’t so well off, it just happens they are in the outer suburbs because housing is cheaper, since its further out. Every country has illegal drug use, hoons and weapons. IT HAPPENS.
But even the yucky suburbs have beautiful houses. Every city in the world has their not so nice suburbs.
Butttttt, nevertheless, the worst suburbs would have to be:
Clayton, Noble Park, Yarraville, Seddon/Footscray, Richmond (only parts), St. Albans..
You know.
Definitely any suburb that has not been mentioned in the previous posts.
Why should they miss out?
It would be far easier to name the best suburbs of Melbourne, there are only a handful of them.
Melbourne is over populated, under resourced starting to look like the States………crime, gangs, weapons, illegal substance use and inadequate housing.
MELTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HELLO??????????????
SO glad my suburb was not mentioned
wow what a list I see plainly to stay away from Footscray and DDong… I did have a bad personal experience with Footscray hospital ( stabbed by a needle that had been left on my bed….. so I think I’ll stick to boganville Laverton North. And Sunshine just scares the creeps outta me.
every suburb has a baaad corner or two. i spent 21 years as a crowd contoller all over victoria and can confidently say every burb has a jerk or two. lived in st albans, rowville, west heidelberg, clifton hill and northcote. no different to the elsternwick caulfield toorak etc.
I frankly admit melbourne is the best city to live in . Every subhurb has a beauty of its own, with its own creativity. If any subhurb has to have a bad name, it could be one or few of its streets thats tarnishing the image of the whole town. I dont even blame the youth. They are a budding power that need to be carefully harnessed and lovingly directed to achieve unbelievable results.
Id like to know more about the gangs, drugs, weapons, alcoholism, etc of Tullamarine….Sean, Mathew ans Mark?
Where exactly? Not something ive seen in my 10 years here? Is it everywhere, or certain ‘spots’? Unless you’re talking about Gladstone Park?…
Sunbury the worst by far. Full of assholes that can’t drive, inhabited by mostly tradesmen that a thugs. Its like the wild west. There is only the train or car to get to Melbourne and the place has s teen problem, just go there on a Friday night, its a hole !
Frankston. no comment
See West Heidelberg has been mentioned quite a few times… i’m born and bred there, want to see the real worldc? Live there… to hell with everyone putting the area down. Curious to know where most of the people who have posted here live.
yer i agree dandy’s not the best, but I was joking about the random stabbings and muggings, i lived there for over 14 years, nothing much has ever happened, just a few hoons, but they’ve stopped now
dandy, my friend lives there “apart from the random satbbings and muggings its not that bad” she/ he says
read a lot of interesting comments think I will move to the North Pole lol
Quite simply it comes to being on the right side of the Yarra. House prices are a bit of give away as to the suburbs one would like to live. Coming from the east. Basically u want to live in the east, not much further past Blackburn. north east alphington, fairfield, ivanahone, south east but not that bogan area . . dont know 4 rest of melbourne but reputations stick. tomo, resa, preston, broady, roxy, franger, dandy, sunshine, melton, narre, crany, bayzy, the gully. rightly or wrongly the suburbs are mums with kids to several dads, druggies, pissheads, hoons,
Anywhere in Melbourne, To many politically correct issues, and cops are afraid to do anything..
In my day, we had respect for people, property and police, nowadays no-one cares about anything except themselves.. give it a few years and watch Melbourne become the worst state to live in..
toughen up politician and police… give the people want the want.. the freedom to walk around and live and make criminals scared to do anything..
Just got all my Tools from my garage stolen , definitely St Albans; tullaroop crt, cant go anywhere heaps lots of young druggies here
saint kilda, fitzroy collingwood and richmond(got nothing to do with the footy teams but we all hate collingwood with a passion and iam no exeption)
well you need to do some reserach narre warren doveton dandy cranbourne yeah right guys step out ya front door for your suburb is just as bad its not the suburb its the lowlife in it if the council did there job as well as the cops these issues woundt happen
I think people hear about the reputation of somewhere or a certain incident and think the whole place is bad. The fact is just about every single suburb in Melbourne is nearly just as bad as eachother and its hard to look for a home anywhere as you find the same problems. (Obviously there are some extreme cases)
The further out we get the cheaper the housing gets and then some inner suburbs have a high amount of immigrants so suffer the same problems. But as its been said id rather the ponces and backstabbing of Toorak than the stabbings and bashings of other suburbs that are generally on the outside of melbourne. There are too many bad ones to think off the top of my head
-West. Melton, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Laverton, Sunshine, St Albans, Sydenham, Footscray, Yarraville, Newport.
-East. Ringwood, Waverly, Springvale, Dandenong, Narre Warrne, Cranbourne, Frankston
-North. Coburg, Preston, Resevoir, Tullamarine, Roxburgh Park, Broadmeadows, Lalor, Craigieburn, Epping,
Toorak. People driving stupidly, and jay walking. Houses there look like there about to fall apart. Very old looking. A lot of people from Toorak go to my university, and all I hear is them talking about how they do dope while they drive, licence less/with licence. Some drunk as well. Caufield station scares me, I have people smoking where it obviously says no smoking, and smoke within ebclosed areas too. Doncaster, a friend of mine came to work DRUNK to school, and thats high school. I was shocked when I was informed. These are the types of people that live in those suburbs. Although yes all suburbs have there issues. But I walked around Carrum Downs 12 o clock as night, no problems. No robberies, no anything. Same with Hampton Park, etc. But I always avoid Dandenong. Really scary! Footscray and Springvale too! Knox and Frankston are also really bogan, but surrounding suburbs such as Wantirna South and Carrum Downs are great!
the way things are going, the whole melbourne and australia is just a hole full of crime, scum and lack of any ethics
I know a little about the inner surburbs of Melbourne but What about the outer surburbs like Doreen, Mernda, Wyndham vale?
One area of Gowanbrae spoilt because 2 bogan families moved in ! and they don’t realise what they are doing .. move to Werribee where you belong !
Heidelberg West is the scumbag hole of Melbourne.
Had to stay there for a month. Woke up every morning to find syringes and bottles in my yard. Hell no!
North Richmond? The commission flats to Victoria street, junkie central and has melbournes worst drug problem at the moment
Any suburb that has nothing to do is a bad place to live, saying that we in the west love that you put down great culturally diverse places like Footscray and Sunshine because we still can afford to live there. I went to Footscray City in High school yes I did see drug deals but I never felt unsafe. It was a fantastic school with a great art department. And I went there back 1998 when Melbourne had a bad heroin problem.
I have been Djing every Friday night since Oct 2011 in Footscray @ The
Exchange Hotel and we have never had one bit of trouble. Never judge a book by it’s cover. Did you know Newport and Yarraville are now some of the best places to live in Melbourne.
I have lived in many suburbs of melbourne all having there pros and cons. I currently live in narre warren and although there are a lot of youths we havent had any violence there just bored. I lived in caulfield and found it to be a fantastic place to live but would not walk the streets after midnight have been followed and had to hide. I was a student in doveton you could leave your door unlocked as the thieves always went to wealthier suburbs, ins prem are lowest there and noone bothers u as they know you dont have anything. noble park has cheap shopping and thats about it dont leave anythong unlocked. keilor has dealers everywhere but i never felt unsafe just sad. all the suburbs were interisting and good and bad in there own way but in everyone i could be myself and not have to pretend to be something im not. Isnt it about the person and what they bring to the suburb

To sum it up:
Most of the western, northwestern, and northern suburbs, but few spots in other areas too:
WEST: I’ll put St Albans, Sunshine and Footscray as the worst.
NORTH: Broadmeadows and the surrounding area (Roxburgh Park, Westmeadows, Dallas, Thomastown, Epping).
SOUTHEASTERN: Noble Park, Dandenong, Narre Warren, Springvale
SOUTH: Frankie & friends.
EAST: Beyond Ringwood up to the puffing billy.
*Notes:
1) I lived in Broadie for a year, once forgot to lock my car (Corolla) at the shopping centre but no one did anything to it, I often went home on the last train (past 12 midnight) carrying laptop and never got robbed. Having said that, it’s full of ‘asylum seekers’, unfriendly neighbours who love to scream, fight and throw ganja party. Please note Toorak legend Edward McGuire and Brighton’s brightest John Ilhan ‘graduated’ from there!
2) As Jamie said, a lot of Indians are moving to those areas. The indians are generally the ‘good guys’, which explained so many unfortunate incidents involving Indians in those areas. But their presence hopefully reduced the bad marks of some of the worst suburbs.
Point Cook! If you get sucked into buying a large plot of land in this green, family-friendly neighbourhood – you’ve been shafted. You and your children will be spending half your lives in traffic or waiting for the lazy coucils to do something about the quality of the roads. Don’t get me started on the public transport, or lack thereof.
Those saying Brighton is the worst suburb: It may not be the ‘best’, whatever that means, but it ain’t ‘bad’. It has facilities, shops, restaurants, sports, cinemas, schools, parks and beach access etc. It is extremely safe, at least in terms of personal safety on the streets and such (I’m not sure of robbery stats). There are no gangs, violent youths, bogans or junkies – literally none. I feel so safe here sometimes I wish someone would try and rob me just to spice up my evening. It is full of mostly middle aged white folk who drive Mercedes/BMW 4WD’s. Not many young people around, and certainly no ‘alternative’ ones. I can count on one hand the number of times I have seen a black person in Brighton, and I’ve been here 20 years (I’m 23). As such you can argue it lacks multiculturalism and ‘diversity’, and of course it is too expensive. But it is what it is – a quiet, safe, upper-middle class suburb.
Roxburgh Park is fine. Lived here 8 years. No problems.
Meadows Heights is bad.
South Yarra to Prahran – noise, traffic, hoons, nightclubs, seedy, violence, alcohol
I love hoppers crossing!
There are some really lovely parts of Geelong but Corio in Geelong is the worst suburb in Victoria by a freakin mile – in paticular the Harper Road area (the Labuan Square shopping centre in North Shore is also pretty heinous). Worth a safari trip just to see it – keep the windows up and the doors locked.
Seymour! Absolute shocker! Looks like Corio has cleaned themselves up. I remember Corio being riddled with bogans, looks like they all moved to Seymour :P
Who cares about drugs live life while u can
Great. every suburb in Melbourne has now been named as undesireable. If we as Victorians hate our state, how can we expect the rest of Australia to like it? It’s no wonder we are looked down upon and regarded as the laughing stock of Australia.
Brendon
“footscray, dandenong and yarra glen!
footscray is baaaaaaad.
the only thing good about it is the people and even thats bad. all they do is yell at you or give you evil looks. i got chased for drugs by people I DONT KNOW 5 times :S like seriously WTF”
HI BRENDON,
-THAT WAS A FUNNY COMMENT!! Evil looks from strangers and and then being chased for drugs by strangers doesn’t sound like fun. I won’t be visiting Footscray in a hurry, that’s for sure. Last time I drove through I got scared, and wound up the car windows cos some evil looking dudes were eyeing me when I was at the stoplights. They looked like whacked-out druggies. Footscray = complete dive!
“SvetlanaBabe
I don’t think anyone here has mentioned Epping in the northern suburbs of Melbourne yet.
It’s full of wife beaters, bong smokers and bogans who live with their mothers.
A truly horrible place.”
Hi SvetlanaBabe,
YOUR COMMENT WAS HILARIOUS – BY THAT, I MEAN THE WAY THAT YOU WORDED IT – GOOD STUFF!
SO WERE MANY OF THE OTHER COMMENTS ON THIS PAGE. THEY CONJURED UP VIVID IMAGES IN MY MIND.
ST.KILDA CERTAINLY HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS, I’VE BEEN A LONG TERM RESIDENT, BUT I’M GLAD TO SAY IT STILL HAS THAT SEEDY UNDERTONE TO IT, WHICH FEELS KIND OF REASSURING IF YOU LIKE SEEDINESS – NOT THAT I’M INTO SEEDINESS PERSONALLY, BUT I LIKE KNOWING ITS STILL AROUND.
THE RICH IN ST.KILDA ALMOST WIPED IT OUT WITH ALL THEIR FLASHY WEALTH AND HAUGHTY ATTITUDES.
BUT ST.KILDA’S SEEDINES CAN NEVER BE TOTALLY DESTROYED; DOES ANYONE REMEMBER WHEN THE PROSITIUTES WERE REFERRED TO AS ‘PROS’ (NOWADAYS THEY CALL THEM ‘HOOKERS’)
AHHH FOR OLD TIMES…
st albans isnt that bad and niether is werebie i recon footscray
I know what cranbourne’s like ive been all around the drugs and gangs before
Not brunswick and Footscray
CRACKBOURNE well just the other day when i was at the staion a guy got his ear bitten off blood like every were
Absolutely detest the new suburbs like Point Cook. It looks like a cheap movie set.
frankston and footscray are the worst…
the best are essendon and armadale!
Sorry I just had to say that I doubt St Kilda will ever become Brighton. The food folks in Elwoox have set a good precedent in that regard and I think we, in St Kilda, will follow… Keeping Art Deco alive.
What a ridiculous question… Positioning suburb against suburb. So St Kikds is bad because we have prostitutes and drug dealers, Toorak is bad because the people there are rich and In Narre Warren people are poor. Come on Melbournism…
Heidelberg, due to the intense truck traffic linking the ring road with the Eastern freeway. The problem is well known and the way to fix it is to complete the ring road but there are a few tree hugging greenies, with too much say, telling us sane people that we are not allowed to. Until it is completed we should force the trucks through the center of Eltham by routing them along Greensborough bypass, Diamond Creek Rd, Ryans Rd, Wattletree Rd, Main Rd, Fitzsimons La, Williamsons Rd, Tram Rd and on to the Eastern. Then we’ll see how they all like it!
Needless to say we are sick of it. It’s somebody else’s turn!!
Every suburb has it’s bad and good parts. There is only two places I refuse to go – Broadmeadows and Footscray. I used to say Craigieburn but I now have friends there so have to go there!
I grew up in Doveton – survived ok. Has it’s own Facebook page
FOOTSCRAY!
Crackbourne
Especially Doveton(a suburb of Dandenong).
I agree Millo! And full of ugly McMansions(future rooming houses) too boot! If you want to see real wealth, try the Mornington Penninsula(like Portsea, Sorrento) and the Mountain areas (like Donvale, Park Orchards, Ringwood North etc).
Toorak & South Yarra are just full of phonies these days!
You mean North Geelong? Because it’s near the prisons in Avalon & Laverton areas?
Just look at all the empty run down shops in Toorak Rd South Yarra, Tron and then see if someone knocks Toorak is for envious reasons. Don’t forget Carl Williams had a drug dealer whacked in “classy” South Yarra, oh and the Walsh St shootings back in ’88!
Albert Park ? McKinnon?, even when St Kilda & Oakleigh were rough areas, Albert Park & McKinnon were always middle-class areas. though I think Brighton will go the same way as St Kilda, too many ugly glass mansions now!
I agree, Dave B, I have lived in Elsternwick & Nth Caulfield and Elsternwick shits over North Caulfield’s hideous McMansions and lack of facilities. Caulfield & Brighton are very overpriced for what they are these days. Mornington is becoming more classy, there is better people there, than the phonies in Caulfield & Brighton, with real wealth too!
Worst: Sunshine, Footscray, Werribee, Boronia,
Bayswater: Pensioner City,
Boronia: singe mothers with 23 kids
Agree with RJ. Theres one or two ropey bits in frankston but south frankston is beautiful.
Your just listing random places now…Northcote is not bad at all
No where near in the ball park of Foostcray, West Heidelberg(absolute hole seriously), Reservoir, Lalor, Broady
Frankston because its full of junkies and dandy/cranbourne because its full of crack heads/hampton park/pakenham/south yarra
its funny cause no one else has said any of those places besides ringwood. northcote cant be too bad?
This is my first time here at melbournism.com. What a truly positive and uplifting experience it has been. Some of the genuinely talented people of our city have posted some really important messages in this thread.
C’mon.
You’re better than this, Melbourne.
take a chill pill Tron…. Why did you google ‘worst suburbs’ ? Maybe just to post a self-satisfying comment??
Essendon & Monnee Ponds, is this a joke? These areas are great, full of good schools, low crime rates, close to the city and perfect to raise a family. I have lived in this area for a long time and the demographics are either quiet elderly citizens or new families. Trust me the Essendon and Monnee Ponds area is safe and cetainally far better than the rest of the suburbs you named.
This question sucks. I can’t believe how many smug, self-satisfied comments there are on this website, casting off-the-hip judgements about suburbs based on at best, personal aesthetic preference, at worst, classist prejudice. The ones that write off Toorak are in the same boat IMO. Reflect for a moment about where you stand and what that enables you to see and not see.
Matt, you have no clue. Frankston has it’s beautiful spots and it’s garbage spots just like any place. I live on Oliver’s Hill and i’ve never been robbed, stabbed or jabbed. The bogans and stoners stick to their place in the filthy backstreets of Franno North and the rest of the normal people enjoy living on the beach in style, thanks very much. Have you ever set foot in Frankston? Maybe it’s too expensive for you. :|
best part of melbourne is the west!
I love Dandenong! There is so much culture there and it’s upgrade has been really great for it’s businesses and it’s turning into it’s very own CBD.. but unfortunately it does come with the CBD problems of scary people at night, crime, bums etc..
I was at Preston the other night and I’ve never felt more unsafe in my life. It looked like an American movie scene.. so scary.
I have to admit I think the west/north are much worse than east/south (even though there are still some dodgy places in these areas)
Nonetheless, Victoria is a beautiful place, if you have travelled you would see this.. we are very lucky..
It’s the only way to travel anywhere if you live in Werribee, idiot.
frankston has a crime happen every 6min..
Jenny, you don’t know what your talking about? St Kilda, Brighton? Ormond? -Sounds like jealously to me. Do you even live in Melbourne?
Frankston full of bogans
Sunbury is terrible, commonly referred to as Scumbry. I’d call it the worst of all.
Taylor’s Lakes is full of bored youths and skanky bimbos.
Werribee train line is full of the worst people, so probably those stops.
St. Albans is a hole.
So is Sunshine.
South Melbbourne, North Melb, Kensington, Flemington & West Melb are dangerous Evil places
haha, place like Dandenong are much worse than Geelong. Geelong is country bogan, but Dandenong is like a third world country! (How that is construed as racists, I mean by the fact the buildings and shops are all old and dodgy)
DANDENONG BY FAR WORST IN MELBOURNE
St. Albans
Jacana/Broadmeadows are just so dirty, and full of young violent People.
Gotta be Carrum Downs! Even the home owners there (very few) have old broken down cars parked on the front lawn. Situated between the sewerage plant at Patterson Lakes and North Frankston …. need I say more?
Ringwood,Knoxfield,Scoresby,Boxhill,Watsonia,vermont,Fitzroy,Collingwood,Hawthorn,Berwick,Glen-w.doncaster & Werribee But out of all of them NORTHCOTE would have to be the WORST!!!!!!!!
Geelongs worst suburb is as half as bad as any bad suburb in Melbourne;
Frankston,mt.martha,Brighton,St.kilda,Albertpark,Ormond Mckinnon,Oakleigh AROUND the STH would have to be the worst
havn’t u seen how filthy carlton & campbellfield areas surroundings are you forgot glenroy & hadfield to. and it’s cragieburn
yes Mike but in the north it would be… TULLAMARINE,COBURG,BROADMEADOWS,EPPING,RESERVOIR,CRAGIEBURN,CAMPBELLFIELD,THOMASTOWN,CARLTON,PARKVILLE,HADFIELD,GLENROY NORTH FAWKNER,ESSENDON & MOONEEPONDS.!
There is a major line of bad suburbs on each side of melbourne e.g. maribyrnog & knoxfield, but on the westside the worst would have to be Newport, Spotswood, Brooklyn, Totenham, Footscray, Sunshine, St.albans, Laverton, Altona & Hoppers-crossing
Sunbury like totaly the worst
Full of rich dogs? You must be joking……….probably rich compared to your dole cheque though!
Are you serious? Are you actually suggesting that Frankston is classy? LMAO! Have you ever actually set foot in Frankston? Frankston has got one of the highest burglary rates in victoria and is full of criminals, druggos, bogans and stoners.
Go there, it will definitely change you mind on this “classy frankston” idea.
yarraville is better now but full of rich dogs
Most of the western suburbs. Since I live in the west, there is so much scum and bogans here! Hate catching the Werribee line, never feel safe on it.
Dandebong.
Kensington, Glenroy, Mt martha, Camberwell
Newport, Yarraville
pt.cook,collingwood,ringwood,hawthorn & werribee
PAKENHAM
CRANBOURNE HAMPTON PARK LYNBROOK LYNHURURST why becouse there boring there all close to the tip to many wogs and bogans
HAMPTON PARK cheapest dirtiest no station nothing to do just drive down past it and ull see
HAMPTON PARK
Thank you Gina; Frankston and surrounds ie. Seaford, Carrum, Mt Eliza, Mornington are beautiful places.
I stayed in Elwood for a few weeks houseminding pets and never felt safe.
Frankston by the sea is a beautiful place; obviously you were mixing with people who are not nice. A beautiful place cannot be destroyed by a few people.
Ballarat, technically a ‘Regional City’ but where do the morlocks come from? Yes! The sphincter of Melbourne- The Western Suburbs.
Hawthorn is the worst place to be on a tuesday night (Uni night).
Don’t go down glenferrie road at all on those nights, I have seen girls with black eyes, throwing up and missing shoes in the gutter. Guys with blood all over them leaning on friends waiting for a cab. People get bashed, cabbies robbed. The 24 hour McDonalds also attracts 5 or 6 homeless people that have now set up there begging in front of the ATM.
Ridiculous.
Mind you its only around the McDonalds and Room nightclub.
Toorak? Sounds like jealousy to me.
Broadmeadows
West Heidelberg
Braybrook
They are the absolute worst, scummiest, druggy, gangy suburbs in Melbourne!
every place has all the same things, it’s all the same. drugs, alcohol, homeless, poor, scum, violent, weapons. everything.. :/
i think 80% of the west suburbs,60% of the east suburbs &75% of the south & 80% of the north have bad reputations for each side + the CITY IS PRETTY BAD AND REPUGNANT TO.
Dave, you must be joking? Toorak, Brighton and Caulfield…gee you must be retarded..are you?
Flemington, Footscray, Dandenong, Kensington and North Melbourne are full of un-savoury people from a certain continent…they are without doubt the worst suburbs in Melbourne. I have nothing against those of them who are good, but gee, if they ever end up coming over to my end of town, they will destroy my suburbs just by showing their coal faces around. Their presence just screams rape, crime, drunkenness and murder.
I think Toorak, Caulfield and Brighton are quite hideous. While i think the beach at Brighton is nice, it is the people that live there that really destroy these suburbs. The best would probably be Essendon, North Melbourne and Kensington.
Broadmeadows and coburg also leave a lot to be desired
Frankston/Langwarrin is terrible
Hoppers Crossing/Werribee are also bad
Dandenong is the worst
These statistics from the Victoria Police Websites
dandenong
Footscary bro!
a says:im sure the up-themselves ponces in Toorak are much better than the violent drunks and druggies of footscray and st albans
Sure, there might be less chance of getting stabbed in the inner-east than those suburbs but you’ll might find yourself more at risk of getting BACK-stabbed instead.
Worst suburbs? Roxburgh Park, Craigieburn, Broadmeadows, Meadow Heights, Dallas, Glenroy (North-west)
Hampton Park, Dandenong, Noble Park, Springvale, Doveton, Cranbourne (South-east)
Boring, in a few areas just downright ugly and unwelcomimg and you have the added bonus of gangs of kleptomaniacs and thugs.
Any suburb in the Broadmeadows area (apart from Greenvale) is worth avoiding if you intend to work hard to pay for your household items AND keep them inside your home, even the newly built suburbs.
Hampton Park had the unusual situation of being about as unwelcoming and unfriendly to outsiders as an isolated country hick town yet it had all the lurks and perks of urbanity such as easily available drugs and its own resident gang of uber-bogan speed-freak thugs and thieves. I don’t know if things have improved much in the past ten years with the influx of Indians over that time.
Woww..a lot of feedback. Thanks all..
deffenitly reingwood east, i nearly got stabbed there!!!
mary ringwoods the best!!!!!!!!! i think moolbark
There is bad everywhere. When I lived in the east, parts of Croydon were especially bad. Never hang around the train station, or even Ringwood station for that matter. I now live in Cranbourne and do not even lock my door during the day, I feel that safe. However, the place gets the tag “Crimebourne” for some reason. I have been living here for 10 years and have never felt threatened or unsafe. I worked in Dandenong for 5 years and parts of that were a bit dodgy, but other parts I felt completely safe. Not a great fan of Narre Warren – too much of a “full sick gang culture” happening. I steer clear of the suburb and Fountain Gate shopping centre. I think Frankston is wonderful and a lovely place to visit. You do get some low life hanging around, they normally reside in Frankston North/The Pines area. But the city itself with it’s cool little shopping districts and it’s gorgeous beachfront and great atmsophere makes it a handy place to visit, considering it is only a 20 minute drive from home.
lots of people think that western suburbs have a bad reputation but no-one relizes how shit and dodgy some outer eastern/south eastern suburbs are like boronia, ringwood, dandenong, narre warren and the list goes on.
I don’t think anyone here has mentioned Epping in the northern suburbs of Melbourne yet.
It’s full of wife beaters, bong smokers and bogans who live with their mothers.
A truly horrible place.
Anywhere there are commission houses, basically. The scum can’t survive in the private rental market and buying a house for them is ‘beyond the pale’.They bring down the values of real estate by their crassness and shittiness.
In the country, towns like Kyneton and Maryborough are worse than West Heidelberg.
Ace summed it up real well. Westside by a long shot,
Western Suburbs. Maiybrynong / Brimbank, Sydenham line. Footscray, Sunshine, St albans etc.
from Footscray right to Sydenham. by farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Thomastown
Lalor
Epping
* Footscray (Absolute **** hole)
* Sunshine (Footscray 2.0. Even worse)
* Springvale (A feeble, dirtier and less interesting Glen Waverley more or less)
* Frankston (Doesn’t need any explanation…I mean, it’s Frankston)
* Werribee (Miles from anywehre, boring, strange smell to it as well)
* Noble Park (Too violent, gangs, constant commodore hoons, no thanks)
* Dandenong (Same problems as Noble Park but not as bad, has improved slightly but still around the bottom)
* Broadmeadows (Rarely been hear but has very bad reputation)
werribee/hoppers crossing is becoming just as bad as any of the other places mentioned
nah worst is broadie, absolute bogan scum
I’m disappointed, only one mention of Frankston – it has to be one of the worst – a guy got his ear bitten off and it was fed to a seagull. Lived there for 2 years and can say its filled with some of the worst scum in Victoria.
balwyn – too many lads at maccas
Definately St Albans- druggies, people can’t drive and almost everyone is angry all the time.
Scumshine – where the police need horses to patrol the station lol! (-:
anything past the bridge really…
Agreed tullamarine is one of the worst ive witnessed
Tullamarine has to be the worst
-drugs
-gangs
-weapons
-alcoholism
-drug dealers
Sunshine is by far the worst, far worse than Footscray
All the crummy westside suburbs
Definitely Broadmeadows. I left it as soon as I could & have been living in Sydney ever since. No regrets.
EPPPIINNGG
HAMPTON PARK MOST BORINGEST SUBURB JUST NOTHING TO DO DRUGS GANGS SHIT ALL TOGTHER
footscray, dandenong and yarra glen!
footscray is baaaaaaad.
the only thing good about it is the people and even thats bad. all they do is yell at you or give you evil looks. i got chased for drugs by people I DONT KNOW 5 times :S like seriously WTF
Roxburgh Park
Broadmeadows
Coburg.
Worst suburbs in Melb:
Roxburgh Park – full of bored young people
Craigieburn – same
North Fawkner
Thomastown
parts of Epping
West Heidelberg – all that prime real estate taken up by under-educated commish types
Noble Park – has gangs
Although not a suburb of Melboure, but a shitty township in Victoria.. Geelong… most definitely
Either Dandenong or St Albans
Reservoir or Footscray
Geelong.
Braybrook
Broadmedows
Heidelberg West. Makes taxi drivers assess you carefully. Parks are for setting cars on fire. Waterways are for shopping trolleys. The high point – guy who spent the day outside the commission flats across the road. With a bullhorn to tell the world about his cheating ex. To this day his chant to passing cars stays with me, so when ever I think or hear Heidelberg West it is followed by “Nothing but the best.”
Glen Iris. Just is.
Gottabe Toorak – full of up-themseves ponces
Dandenong. So dirty!
Toorak! Followed closely by Brighton!
Definitely Narre Warren. I had the displeasure of living there for over a year. Never again. Hoonsville and nothing nice can be said about it!
