After you’ve lived in a suburb long enough, you begin to accumulate a few local’s secrets.
Maybe it’s a hidden store, scenic spot, or hard-to-find pub that only locals know about.
Perhaps it’s an awesome shop or cafe that treats the regular locals particularly well.
Is there a certain local way of doing certain things in your area?
Or perhaps you’ve got a celebrity living nearby that everyone knows about, but keeps tight-lipped about.
Every Melbourne suburb has its own local’s secrets – but maybe it’s time to share the knowledge around with others…

Little Captain on Inkerman Street for those that live in Balaclava. I’ll probably be kicked out of the suburb now for telling everyone else.
Melbourne’s best felafel available at Half Moon Cafe in Coburg Mall…
Top Hat Antiques on High Street Thornbury has some of the best vintage clothing and nic nacs, the 86 tram will get you there can’t remember which stop but it’s near the Thornbury Theatre and Zingara Cafe
Glen Iris is a boring, boring place. Unfortunately that’s not really much of a secret.
it’s secret for a reason…
The Local Taphouse on Carlisle St, St Kilda. Esp. the rooftop. The beers on tap are really bloody good, and they serve simple, tasty, modern comfort food.
Near the fire at the Parkdale Beach Cafe is an excellent place to be on a cold day.
When its hot, the outside chairs are fantastic.
Cuppa Cottage in Station St, Sandringham. Great coffee, and just good!
bomb cafe in abbotsford, quality produce with a smile.
Miss Jackson in St. Kilda! Great coffee and great food. A locals haven close to Fitzroy St.
Not really a secret but $9 movies, all day everyday at forest hill chase hoyts. It’s better than gold class/director’s lounge sometimes. We had the cinema to ourselves for the viewing of My sister’s keeper.
Definitely think the large wooden dog that resembles a Trojan Dog at Fairfield station (cnr Station st) is impressive. Like the way it’s eyes light up at night and so becomes a beacon!
The 1000 stairs in Upper Ferntree Gully! Stunning place for a walk!
glen iris IS boring……..
Pizza Expresso, Macedon Square in Doncaster. Legendary thin based pizzas
$1.20 sushi rolls at Sasaki Sushi in Poath Rd Hughesdale. Cheap AND delicious
What’s with all the Glen Iris bashing – Little Thai Princess on Burke Rd, Glen Iris is a gem! And early morning brekky at the Glen Iris Milk Bar opposite Ferndale Park. We are Melbourne’s population centre after all…
Pearl Oyster in Thornbury for a lovely brunch menu…and gooood coffee!
And Merri Creek to experience nature at it’s best!
Not really a secret perhaps, but there are festivals held in Caulfield Park several times a year, including fireworks during Chanukah (December). Also, there are some really cool exhibitions held at Glen Eira Town Hall.
