Although lots of us use Melbourne public transport every day – there’s tons of little-known tips when it comes to ticketing and railway timetables or bus timetables. Perhaps you even know of public transport tricks to get to Melbourne Airport cheaply.
What are your thoughts on low fares or getting around town on public transport in Melbourne?

If you want some extra room on a Tram, stand on the doorsteps on the non-activating side of the tram. When the tram fills up you will have more personal space than standing in the isle.
My tip is: don’t use the public transport in Melbourne…
I have never paid for a tram
Ride … Just stand and watch who gets on. If its three yarra tram staff. Hop off. Too easy.
Two tips
(1) a ten x 2 hour ticket is better than a weekly in my opinion
(2) always have a spare Sunday saver ticket in your purse/wallet, they’re so much cheaper than the other options
If you are heading into the city validate your two hr ticket after 6pm and it turns into a daily which I think expires at 3am (?) I do that when I am going to night matches of footy. Also love the Sunday saver tickets.
when catching trams in the cbd, the ticket machines onboard sometimes say out of zone when you try to purchase a city saver, which means its unavailable to buy so you get a free ride.
1) If you don’t commute regularly, buy a 10x2hr ticket instead of a weekly: if your 2hrs are up and you validate it after that, it’s valid for the rest of the day, but you don’t have to use it on consecutive days (unlike the weekly).
2) If you’ve got a 2-hr ticket, get on even a minute past the hour – you’ll get almost 3hrs in place of 2.
