Currently, on my way home, I walk up Clarendon Street towards the city between 5-6pm. When I cross the bridge, just after the Casino and I look out to the left, down the river, the next bridge down (I don’t know the name of it) has blue lights and they reflect off the water and when the sun is setting and almost dark, the combination is a beautiful sight.

I don’t think that’s what you were after, but that’s what came to mind first.

I love to take photos around the Yarra in the city. Different times of day bring out different moods and colourings, the water is reflective (or not, depending on how heavy the traffic is on the river), you can get lovely cityscapes, and there are many places from which to get your shot. Between the Princes Bridge and the footbridge further down (halfway to the casino), there are plentiful photo opportunities. I’ve got more photos of that area than probably anywhere else in Melbourne.

I’m also very partial to taking photographs in some of the older cemeteries around the city. There are beautiful sculptures that make excellent photographic studies, especially at different times of day. My favourite is (of course) the Melbourne General Cemetery, but the Kew cemetery (boroondara) has one of the most beautiful tombs you’ll ever see, the Springfield Memorial, as well as plenty of other great sculptures just waiting to be turned into photographs.

The lanewasy, especially the bluestone ones, of our older inner suburbs. Afternoon light, bluestone and varied colours of corrugated iron with some dep rusty tones….. perfect!
