My personal preference is that good service can make a romantic night superb, while location matters less. On that basis I think the staff at Cutler & Co have been superb in knowing when to intervene & when not too on my romantic dates. Expensive - but you can see what you're paying for. Ruling out anything at the casino or Southbank - mass produced/move em along and suck them dry ambience. Cutler & co does great food but you're too close to other tables and can't make yourself heard. Stokehouse can be good, but relies too much on location and past glories. If you get a good table La Luna in Carlton North is a bit of a favourite though. The maître d' is superb, waiting staff can be very good or just ok though.
