Thanks to Kate for today’s question!
Exactly what makes a good beer garden is tricky to define. Maybe it’s simply that the atmosphere is great, or the setting is beautiful.
Perhaps there’s some great live music, or little nooks and crannies you can hide away in.
Maybe you’ve stumbled across that rare breed of beer garden that actually has a bar in the garden.
Everyone’s got their own favourite beer garden in Melbourne – so let everyone else know why your favourite is so good!

The Commercial Hotel, Yarraville… best in the West.
Probably Belgian Beer Garden

The Retreat in Brunswick
I like the Belgian Beer Garden, mostly for its location on the grounds of the Victorian Institute for the blind. C’mon, where else is better to get blind?
I’m probably alone on this as my friends hate this bar, but I like the beer garden at the Melbourne Central Lion. You are outside the pub, yet still inside Melbourne Central.
I like Taxi and Riverland at Fed Sq.
In the North, The Standard in Fitzroy. Southside, The Windsor Castle. Oh Summer, where for art thou?
Perseverance on Brunswick St :)
Without a doubt, Melbourne’s best, traditional, beer garden is the Railway Hotel in South Melbourne.
Massive tree for shade, partly covered and heated for nasty weather – simply the best!

Belgian Beer Garden and The London are my picks – spent a little time at Bridie O’Reilly’s on Chapel in summer.. street level makes it good for interactions with passers-by.
The Belgian beer cafe on St Kilda rd for sure!
The Standard Hotel Fitzroy.
Rooftop Bar, bar selection isn’t much to rabbit on about, but when the sun sets on Melbourne’s glass buildings around you, you don’t care what you have in your hand!
Belgiaaaaaaan.
Belgian Beer Garden!
Bridie O’Reilys on Chapel St
Sabroso in Seddon- bean bags in the sun with great drinks and even better service and tapas menu
Rooftop (curtin house).. On swanston street
The retreat Hotel Brunswick! The Railway Hotel South Melbourne is awesome too
Beaumaris Hotel on Beach Rd, Emerald Peacock in CBD or The Aviary in Abbotsford
