Inner city: I wish I lived in Clifton Hill or Elwood.
Outer: Panton Hill - close enough to the city to comfortably commute, but you can still bump into a kangaroo on your way to buy the milk.

I love living in Carlton North.

Clsoe enough to the city to be able to walk into it. Far enough form the city that you do get some quiet. Great parks around - Royal Park, Princes Park.

The cemetery is quiet.

some really good resto's and bars aorund - La Luna, Geralds Bar. Can wander into Fitzroy easily enough, or out to Brunswick. Love it!

For me, it's a toss-up between Richmond and Brunswick.

Richmond has a great night-life and some great places to eat. Richmond Station is a hub for many other train lines. I've spent many nights out with friends and family in Richmond and it never gets old.

Brunswick has a nice southern European and middle-eastern culture which makes for some of the best places to buy food from those parts of the world.

BRUUUUNSWIIIIIICK!

It has a wide range of pubs and clubs, restaurants offering food of all kinds and I've never felt in danger late at night. During the day, it has all the main requirements you need - shops, decent cafes, parks, easily accessible to PT and major highways, and it's just that perfect distance away from the city so as not to be out the middle of whoop-whoop yet still far away enough from the city to make you feel like you're at home
