Rubys Lounge is great for a small party, awesome vibe there and live music provided :)
Manhattan- Elliots Bar is also awesome, bit bigger and brighter, but the bar closes early i think

I had my 21st at Cabinet Bar: http://www.cabinetbar.com.au/
They didn’t have the balcony then but even still it was really good – we just used the back section of the place [as I couldn't hire it out completely as it was a Sat night] and set up a tab and for finger food to come out [which was all very delicious and there were a few different things.. they were also very considerate of the fact some of my friends are vego].. I had ordered a cake through a place the lady who runs Cabinet recommended and it was AMAZING – a chocolate mousse cake! They even wrote Happy Birthday [name] on the cake and brought it out and sang happy birthday to me! Cute!
The best part of all as I kinda said just now was the lady who runs the place was very helpful and had some good ideas to help the party along!
Melbourne is a pretty big place, and 21-year-olds aren’t usually rolling in cash, so I’d say the BEST place for a 21st is somewhere your mates can get to and from without paying too hefty a cab fare. Thus, it’s pretty difficult to recommend anywhere without a more specific location.
However, as a former hospitality employee, I’ve worked at many 21sts, and can offer some general advice:
- Find somewhere that will let you bring your own food. Even if they offer catering AND you choose to pay for it (and it’s ALWAYS over-priced), ALSO bringing a bunch of chips and dips that can sit around all night is a good idea. Here’s why: most people don’t eat much food early on — especially boys; girls will have a bit, as will the mums and dads and family friends, but no-one will eat all 300 spring rolls, and the oung lads won’t touch anything. I don’t know why. But come midnight/1am, the boys will start stuffing their faces with anything in sight. Only most venues will have removed the 240 cold leftover spring rolls well and truly by then. Have something for these guys to eat, or they’ll all leave early to get a kebab. (This extends to cake, too BTW: no-one will eat it at first, but three hours later, they can’t get enough)
- Bar tabs are good, but keep it to beer, wine and basics. Because your mates WILL order 25 jager bombs if they’re on the house. And bring your wallet, because it WILL run out way earlier than you anticipate.
- Don’t leave it to the venue to pick the music, don’t let your friends anywhere near the iPod. So many tears are shed over fights between wannabe DJs. Pre-make more than enough mix CDs/iPod playlists. Do not let your friends anywhere near them.
- No-one wants to hear ten speeches. Mum or dad, one sibling, one friend. That’s plenty.
- If you and your mates must do drugs, do them AFTER leaving the venue when you’re headed to a club or wherever. The venue staff WILL know. They will NOT be OK with it (it jeopardises their license and is a huge headache all around). They will probably kick you out.
- Bring some comfier, less fancy shoes, birthday girls. No one will notice the change at 1am. You will thank me.
OK, I will offer ONE suggestion on venue: don’t stress about it too much. The venue doesn’t make the party. As long as it has enough room, isn’t too far away, there’s food and booze, somewhere to sit, and somewhere to dance, your friends and family will have a good time. There’s no need to spend an ass-load of money or go too far-out with decorations and outfits and limos.
(PS I loathe 21sts and didn’t have one, so take my advice with a grain of salt)
Box Hill Darkzone is the bomb
i have had a look about darkzone in boxhill for my 21st but i cant find the adult prices???
any bar and you just get drunk, like me. I threw a glass at my boyfriend on my 21st birthday after seven shots and 4 beers
I had my AMAZING 21st @ Cabinet Bar & Balcony,
11 Rainbow Alley, Melbourne

It was so unbelievable amazing, from the amazing staff on the night, they looked after everyone so well, even giving table service to my folks when the place was jam packed, the DJ was unbelievable, the disco light, the overall venue which is so versatile, my theme was red carpet glamour and we had a red carpet up the stairs into the entrance with all red, black & silver balloons, an amazing cake all which was organised for me, the lady that ran the show was so fantastic she had everything under control and i didn’t have to worry about a thing all night, I pretty much told her what i wanted and when I arrived it was about 500% better than what i dreamt!
I recommend cabinet as the best venue in Melbourne for not only a 21st but any other function or party. I will never forget my 21st and that’s all because of Cabinet bar and its amazing team!
A bit wierd, but any kids play center. Cheap, catering available, safe and fun.
