TZU, no competition.
Always one of the best, most fun, live hiphop shows you’ll ever see. They’re funny and smart and have some serious talent. I’ve brought people along to these shows who aren’t even hiphop fans, and they’ve had an awesome fun time.
I’m with Dan!
Curse ov dialect. Everything else is just American-aping bullshit.
I have many favourites. No hip hop performance is the same and whilst artists might feed off after artists, many of them form their own niche and hold their own.
I saw Joelistics recently and he was absolutely amazing. He’s a very natural, honest and sound performer without the bravado. He’s not trying to meet the “criteria” of what it means to be an excellent MC and that’s what makes him stand out.
In terms of technique and lyrics, Mantra is right up there for me. His lyrics are clever, heavily loaded and he raps with a confidence that is very appealing.
Illy is highly lovable and a bit of a ratbag. He connects with his audience members through the power of inspiration. Illy’s niche is that his songs have an element of pop to them which satisfies a wide range of listeners on a wide range of levels.
Mind Over Matter are the ones to watch. These guys are full of passion and life. They know how to party but they’re also very socially conscious and although they’re younger in age, they know how to write.
Other favourites are Thundamentals and Pegz.
I find it funny that Josh mentioned “Curse ov dialect” and American in the same sentence, since Curse Ov Dialect have always used American Accents, are you one of the crew or one of their entourage trying to give them a “big up” ? Seriously Curse are not even talked about or recognised as a real hip hop crew.
If we are going to talk about real hip hop from Melbourne we would be talking about ;
Lyrical Commission
Tornts
Trem
Reason
Bias B
Everyone who is talking about Illy and Mind Over Matter has no idea what hip hop is. You are listening to substandard fuckwits rhyming over a beat, this is not hip hop
A-LIMIT FROM T.H.D RECORDS
sorry and why because hes a true entertainer and I am attending the RIP IT UP Grand Opening he will be performing at in Melbourne Central. Humble talented people like him will go far.. Enough said!
@Joana
WHO?
The question was “who is Melbourne’s best hip hop act”
Not “Who can promote an unknown act”
RS wrote “Curse Ov Dialect have always used American Accents” – bro, are you serious? Curse were literally one of the first aussie hip hop acts to use an “australian” accent. Anyway, who gives a fuck what accent you rap in? For some reason that is a big hang up in Australian hip hop. It seriously does not matter as long as what you are saying and doing is good, it is as simple as that.
What I mean by “american-aping” is the general attitude, aggressive posturing, clothing and mundane subject matter espoused by the majority of australian hip-hop acts that get shoved down our throat on the radio daily and seems to get by without a word of criticism. It is all terribly boring, however I will be sure to check out some of what you have listed above to see if there is any hope in melbourne.
As for whether i am one of their “crew” trying to give them a “big up” and “Curse are not even talked about or recognised as a real hip hop crew” — christ, what are you, 12? Like you said yourself, the question was “who is Melbourne’s best hip hop act”
