That scrumptious battery crunch, that stinging oil down the back of your throat, the mysteriously uniform meat in the dim sims… we enjoy our fish and chips here in Melbourne.
So where is Melbourne’s best fish and chip shop? Where do you like to consume them after you ‘ve purchased them?

‘Hooked’ on Chapel Street in Prahran have a great menu – with your traditional battered favourites and modern Asian-inspired seafood creations as well.
But the main reason to go is for the hand-cut chips! Yum.
I’ve always eaten in, you can get a glass of wine or have a beer, sit at the big communal table and watch Chapel Street pass you by while you savour your fish n chips.
Highly recommended.
yeah that Rex Hunt place was ordinary – especially seeing as the last time I was there, I waited 20 minutes for a fucking piece of fish a handful of chips!
I must admit, my favourite is at the end of my street. It’s on Sydney Road in Coburg, a few doors up from The Post Office Hotel – asking for $3 worth of chips gets you enough chips to feed a small army
Beluga on Toorak Rd in South Yarra. Fresh and fantastic. :)
Bill’s Fish Shop on Burke Rd in Hawthorn East. Good old fashioned Fish and Chips. The freshest fish, crunchy crispy batter, golden hand cut chips and fluffy potato cakes. Feeling hungry?
The Kingfisher Blue (Fish And Chips), Wheelers Hill .. bit of a hike .. but worth it :)

i went too “beluga” fish and chips on Toorak rd, and i had one of the biggest and best burgers i have ever had. I took some mates back there with me a few days later, and they all thought the chargrilled calamari, burger with the lot, and the grilled fish was the best. Plus they were liscenced.
mt rd fish and chippery in ascot vale…reaal goood!
Jims Fish and Chips – Hawthorn Rd Brighton East.
The fish is always fresh but the miracle comes in the batter.
The batter recipe (owner – Jim) has been the same for at least 25 years.
This batter cooks perfectly and doesn’t make you feel like you’ve just drank a litre of oil.
Best….fish…ever
Hook, Line and Sinker in Glen Waverley! Great looking place, beer on tap and great fish and chips! Burgers are awesome… A must! Check it out, not sure if they have another store somewhere closer to the CBD?

Armadale Fish & Chips. Traditional, no fancy stuff with just enough grease, but not too much.
Clamms on Acland Street in St Kilda – delicious, fresh fish served by very nice staff
The best is in burgundy street heidelberg. Restaurant is called The Fish. Thick juicy flake and light crunchy batter. Served take away or eat in. They have cutlery and delicious salads all home made. No greasy food here! The burgers are huge and very popular amongst diners. The also sell flake burgers. We drive from Preston because we haven’t found anywhere to top this fish and chip shop.
Another vote for Beluga on Toorak Road — great food and great value.

Only one place in Melbourne. The ‘OLD SCHOOL FISH N CHIP SHOP’ on St georges rd. As an Englishman growing up on fish n chips i come to love them more than life itself but since moving to Melbourne I have struggled something crazy to find anywhere even close to good fish n chips UNTIL..! I discovered melbournes best kept secret…! THE OLD SCHOOL FISH N CHIP SHOP. keep up the good work.
