There’s a lot of coffee shops to pick out from in the Melbourne metro and CBD area. So which is the optimum for drinking chocolate in Melbourne?
Many of us just aren’t as disposed to order a coffee and really love our sugary hot cocoa delicacy… instant drinking chocolate just doesn’t cut it! So what to do? Visit the best cafe in your city and get it there!
Maybe you’re happy with a jumbo coffee chain, a boutique chocolate specialist, a wondrous homemade cocoa supplier or simply a great local cafe in your local Melbourne suburban area. Where’s your favourite, and why is their hot chocolate formula so wonderful?
Don’t forget to tip us off to how you like to order your cocoa, too – possibly something like a trace of vanilla? Share your secrets!

Monsieur Truffe on Smith St. It’s a very “adult” hot chocolate — much more subtle and bittersweet than the “melted chocolate goop in a cup” you get elsewhere, but still very creamy and made from really good quality chocolate. To be honest, I don’t really love hot chocolate in general all that much, but these are seriously delicious.
Gânache Chocolate in South Yarra hands down, their chili hot chocolate is the best! Second best is Koko Black. Both are considered gourmet hot chocolate for using good quality chocolate, cream, and milk.
The Jaffa hot chocolate @ The Chokolait Hub – unusual, rich and decadent! Check out some of the Hot Chocolates I’ve tried around Melbourne: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aurora_design/sets/72157623406056683/
each peach at 506 Lygon St, Brunswick. They melt dark choclate and take it from there. best winter afternoon pick-me-up ever!
Koko Black in Collins Street does a yummy Belgian hot chocolate.
Hi, Garden Tuscany (at 32 Young Street Moonee Ponds VIC 3039 do great Hot Chocolates. They use real chocolate (no powder) and have a hot Chilli version also. Very rich and quite tasty.
Lindt at Chadstone
Kanteen – thick, Italian style
I agree the Belgian hot chocolate at Koko Black in Collins St is the best ever hot chocolate. Deliciously wicked!
Yes I totally agree Teresa. Lance’s Chilli Hot Chocolates are a must! (it’s a very cute backgarden cafe in Moonee Ponds)
Hands down, Max Brenner, Clarendon Street.
PoleXpresso Mobile Cafe make THE BEST Hot Chocolate in Melb!
Hahndorf’s Fine Chocolates Doncaster East make the most amazing coverture hot chocolates & coffees. You flavour your pure coverture chocolate which is melted with a truffle…strawberry, grand manier, caramel or my favorite hazelnut. YUM!!
Proud Mary for a cafe hot chocolate or chocolait for a Belgian hot chocolate.
Theobroma chocolate lounge at Spencer st
ITALIAN hot chocolate (NOT the regular hot chocolate) at Brunetti’s
Definitely Choclatte in Camberwell (Back of Burke St). They make theirs out of Lindt chocolate. I actually don’t like hot chocolate(shock horror) but this was absolutely delicious and the only one I’d ever try again.
Fraus in North Melbourne! Absolutely amazing and every flavour you can think of.
Definitely Koko Black in Royal Arcade! Their iced chocolates are amazing, too.
Agree with Brunetti’s for Italian hot choc & ditto Koko Black, San Churro (cinnamon), and Max Brenner for melted choc versions. Hottest & not too sweet is Classic (no cream or marshmellow) at Starbucks. Most generous is Cafe Vic at the Arts Centre – it is a huge cup.
In my opinion and tasting Max Brenna Chocolate Bar The Glen Glen Waverley
I might be boring here, but the Lindt Hot Chocolate is quite amazing, especially when you mix it yourself.
Lindt cafe on Collins Street!
Cafe Vue have fantastic hot chocolate!
La Petite Gateau in Little Collins St. No question.
